Brake Fade

Recommended Posts

Guest Trig

I have experienced a touch of fade in the past when really giving it some, so l'm assuming this will happen after about a lap on a circuit! Which pads do all you trackday boys use? Going to castle combe this weeknd so would like to get some sharpish.

Mintex c-tech? Greenstuff?

(for 205 MI16 on 1.6 calipers)

oh, and your favourite cheap supplier, l'll probably end up on the blower to demon tweaks.......

cheers boys

I would recomend Pagid RS4's not cheap at over £100.00 per set but you will never get brake fade :D

Mintex M1144's (aka C-Tech). Superb in my opinion. Some have reservations 'cos I think they might stir up a bit more dust than some of their competitors' products, but I haven't noticed any more than using standard pads.

Oh, and Merlin Motorsport at Castle Coombe can supply them.

I swear by 1144's too.

Had them on my 306 Rallye at Anglesey last year and on the 205 at Knockhill and they didn't fade.

I'd rather have dust on my wheels and be able to stop :D

1144's are fabulous. More importantly, when are you going to get yourself a decent brake set up?

Is that the disc/pad setup used by the 205 challenge cars? Or just some pricey pads? I was considering the same for for my car. Any feedback?

Last thing I worry about is brake dust on the track.

Greenstuffs have a worrying problem melting to the discs at the moment, probably best avoided for now.

M1144 get my vote, from reports on here the Ferodo DS2000 (I think) perform very similar.

Make sure you have decent fluid (and well bled), as I found the m1144 can get pretty hot, I managed to boil to cheapo dot 4 (Graville I think) with these pads.

www.raldes.co.uk --- rally design was cheapest last time I wanted a set of pads.

I've just put some M1155 in my track day car - i dont know how they will perform on the track but on the road they are simply awesome - Anyone know how the M1155 compares to the M1144 ?

DS3000 are superb on Knockhill - NO fade, and superb response, BUT £90 a set. Saying that they do appear to last VERY well. Also create alot of dust, but as said you shouldn't be bothering about the dust on track - You want to be able to stop well, and with confidence everytime.

I DON'T rate Greenstuff - Redstuff were OK, but lifespan was crap (+ went on fire!!).

As for set-up, GTi-6 calipers + 283mm discs, with rear discs and 23mm master cylinder is hard to beat in both performance and cost.

Again I agree. I think EBC have managed to market their stuff well but the Green Stuff don't live up to expectations.

Have heard of flaming Green Stuff pads on a Citroen AX!!!!

ive used greenstuff on the track and never had a problem, even with staying on track for over an hour a time :D

So far the pads in my car have done over 400 track miles and a few thousand road miles and still have nearly half pad thickness left,

Well going off what the general consensus is about greenstuff I would say the EXCEDE all expectations!!! as from my experience they last very long with no fade. The only concern I found and posted on here about was the high speed vibration I was getting which was due to the copper in the pad compound; they actually now supple pads for large disc diameters (currently only german cars) and I bet they are copperless pads (and similar to the old greenstuff compound which I thought were fantastic pads).

The only other thing is that there have been at least 3 compounds/versions of greenstuff pads and many tried the earlier compound which I assume must have been poor. I tried the pre-V4 pads and they were brilliant pads lasting about a year with 8 or so track days.

Tarox pads should be avoided, both fast road and competition. The fast road pads are on par with a standard replacement pad (circa 30mins track use from new :D ) and the competition pads don't fade but wear very quickly (2 track days).

I'm currently on Mintex 1144/C-Tech and have to say they are very good pads, with very little wear from the use I've had out of them and very good bite from cold and hot.

I beleive there is a new version of 1144 out which has low dust and even longer lifespan.

who's the best online supplier for mintex c-tech and how much do they usually cost for gti and gti-6 calipers?

i need a set for my T16 calipers which are effectively the same pad contact area shape as for the gti-6,

only with a bit shorter "butterfly" ends which slot into the ends of the caliper - so a different model.

i think some alfa's used the same calipers so there's another option for me.

if you need to find the correct pad for your car, look on the mintex website. the lists for the types of pad for the cars aren't especially accurate (i found pads for my 1.9GTi there under 1.9 Diesel, not under any of the GTI categories). The important bit is, there's pictures of all the pad designs on there. Very useful & much better than describing the £odd shaped pad with a holey bit in the top and two half-holey bits in the bottom"...

I could never get greenstuff to fade either, they are a very good pad when they work with your setup.

The tarox pads I tried faded instantly and juddered but I replaced them with my cheap Direct Components ones which didn't actually fade, the pedal just sank to the floor from each high speed stop as the pad wore down literally in one session!!! ;)
