Fuel Pump

Recommended Posts

Phil205

I have a 1988 1.6 (XU5JA - B6D engine) 205 GTI.

Normally I have no problems, but occasionally, I find that sometimes after I switch off the ignition, I can hear a whirring noise which sounds like it is coming from the fuel tank, presumably the fuel pump is still running ? When I lift the bonnet, it sounds like a hissing noise. No fuel is leaking.

I have stopped this before by disconnecting the battery for a while then reconnecting.

Can you please advise :-

1) Is it the fuel pump that is continuing to run and why ?

2) Is this normal ?

3) If it is not normal, how is this fixed ?

Thankyou.

1) sounds like it

2) no

3) replace the tachymetric relay, its situated next to the ecu above your right knee.

hissing noise under the bonnet would be fuel flowing through the fuel rail back to the tank.

Or for now unplug the tachymetric relay or fuel pump fuse to stop the pump running

Replacing the relay might be a good idea, however, I just rceived a price from Peugeot this morning, £94 + VAT!!!!

Unbelievable.......

There are 2 relays close to the ECU (above the driver's right knee) :-

Relay 1 has 7 connectors = "Cartier 12V ref 02474" - bolted to the ECU - presumably this is the fuel pump relay ?

This seems to be the replacement part ? - http://www.thetoolboxshop.com/0-723-42-dur...elay-4349-p.asp

Yellow wire = 1 (cable ident)

Green wire = 15

Brown wire = 30

Blue wire = 31

Green/yellow wire (Earth ?) = 50

White wire = 87

Beige wire = 87b

Relay 2 has 5 connectors = the relay is not labelled - the relay is taped to the wire loom - No idea what this relay is for ?

Blue wire = 30

Brown wire = 85

Brown/red wire = 86

Not connected = 87

Blue wire = 87a/87D

1) Please advise which relay does what.

2) Please confirm the part number that I would need to quote if I need to buy a replacement from a dealer/motor factor/internet.

3) Web links for replacement parts would be a great help (eg GSF or similar).

The part no for GSF is T93590.

The fuel pump relay is the black one that is fastened to one of the ecu mounting studs. The other relay appears to be for an immobiliser either disabling the fuel pump or starter motor.
