Engine Identification...

Hi all, back again on here after a long absence.

Well, I've got a GTi engine that i'm rebuilding for fun, its a 1.6 engine, i know that much, but how do i know which variant it is? As i believe there were two? 105 and 115bhp iirc?

Also, i will need to buy new gaskets and seals for it, where is the best place to go for them? I remember a few horror stories about Autofive i think? Are Peugeot dealers expensive?

Headbolts, i presume, need replacing each time they are removed?

Can i remove the pistons and liners from the block all as one unit?

Any other stupid questions i will ask in here to save clogging up the forum with my crap.

Thanks for your time,

Ed

someone will probs be along to confirm but if you have a T55 torx head bold then you have the 115BHP if you have a standard bolt head then you have the 105HP

thats about the extent of my knowledge

:P

TBH it's pretty unlikely that it's the 105 engine. It was only used for a short time very early in production, and most of them are long gone by now.

The 105 engine doesn't have a breather pipe on the cam cover.

Measuring parts is a good way :) Valve sizes changed from 105 to 115 head.

But if i don't know the different sizes how can i compare? :D

Thanks for the replies though people, much appreciated.

Now where to get parts from?

this isn't a massive help but...

afaik, the later 115bhp model used the same head as the 1.9 gti (same valve sizes)

I think the 105bhp engine was more common in the cars built for the Japanese market?

Liners will come out with the pistons inside (take it you dont wanna turn them? not doing rings/hone?)

New headbolts = Oh yes, streach bolts.

Gaskets and seals = Your looking for a Head set of gaskets (big set of everything above the block, headgasket itsself, valve stem oil seals etc...) and a conversion set of gaskets, (which is the whole gasket set for the block) Any motorfactors or machine shop should be able to supply you with these, but ask for Payen sets and bolts, quality of some no name sets can be a bit suspect) GSF car parts online will have these as well probably and their stuff is usually cheap and of good quality if not OE parts themselves sometimes. I suspect Pug dealer would be quite pricey and probably supplying pattern parts themselves for silly things like gaskets nowdays for our old cars.

New rod bolts might be an idea, then you have got rings, shells

There is tons of stuff on here about rebuilds, have a search :)

What do you mean by "turn" them? I'm only doing a quick rebuild this time, simply because i have no budget what so ever. The engine is only temporary until i've decided which direction to take.

I wonder why they refer to the bottom end set of gaskets as the conversion set?

I've tried searching, but i can't get the bugger to work. I've tried narrowing down everything but it keeps failing me :D

Ted.

Liners distort, Ive heard tales of a mate doing a metro engine I thin khe said it was, and it seized due to the liners being accidently rotated. Dunno how true that was? They do distort tho and im pretty sure old rings dont like being disturbed either, so all in all probably best to mark the crown of the piston to the liner with a perminant marker so you dont create any possible problems for yourself.

But taking out the liners will make new liner seals a compulsary purchace.

EDIT: I must admit the search function is a bit pants here, helped tho with " " around your search terms, filters out most of the random results.

EDIT 2: Called a conversion set as it 'converts' the head set into a full set of engine gaskets. Bit weird really, whats wrong with head and block sets?

hah ahhh Cheers, i've just read up on the pumaracing site about turning the liners 180degrees, i might do it, although i'm not sure yet.

One question i do have though, compression ratios, i'm well aware of what they are and how you calculate them, but i'd like to know something.

We've established that my engine is the XU5JA engine? this would be 9.25:1 CR then?

the engine is 1580cc.

1580 / 4 = 395cc per cylinder.

Does anybody know the standard figure, in cc's for the head volume, head gasket volume and when the crown volume?

I plan on having my head skimmed to get it perfectly flat, and i'm considering skimming a bit more off to up the CR, but i need to know the figures so that i can do the math on how much to skim off to get it to about 10:1 - 10.5:1

Hope people actually see this topic now after typing that out!

I have managed to get my head around the search function now thanks to Merlin, but there aren't any topics that cover it for a 1.6GTi engine

The engine code on the mount plate will tell you the CR.

Where abouts is this located? And its not just the ratio i need to know, its the three volumes required to work it out so that i can adjust it myself.

Its the 9.25:1 engine, so i'll be looking to raise that to 10:1 ish, nothing too over the top.

Now any idea's how much i need to skim it by?

Ed.

Your machinist will be best equiped to answer that for you, main reason being it may of already had a considerable skim already.

Its alright now, we've calculated how much to take off to get the required CR, although unfortunately we couldn't do it this afternoon, little bit too busy at work. So it'll wait until the new year now.
