Cold Weather And Starting Problems

Recommended Posts

Guest Delboy

Hi guys,

With the onset of the colder weather I've noticed a starting problem with my Mi16.

Used to start first time everytime, now it will turn over, catch and then immediately die unless you can catch it with the throttle. It will then generally start on the second attempt, run on three cylinders briefly then get on with running normally.

From that point on if I stop the engine for any reason then it will restart on the button with no probs.

I'm unsure if it's cold weather or damp weather as the two have gone hand in hand so far.

My thoughts were HT leads/ Distributor / Rotor arm maybe being passed their best, or spark plugs needing a clean. Is there anything else which might cause these symptoms?

Thanks guys

Del

Simes

Mine was doing this recently, I found that the ECU temp sensor plug was broken and consequently not connected.

Back of the thermostat housing, where the distributor attaches. Blue plug.

Cheers rich, I'll add that to the list! What voltage should the sensor read when cold so I can test it?

Another suggestion I've had is the cold start solenoid, will try that too. Going to be a busy weekend!

Just to update with the answer on this one.

My battery died on Monday in the cold, jumped it and thought nothing of it. Tuesday it died again, so I replaced with a brand new battery and all is well.

The new battery has also cured my starting issues and the car no longer runs on three on start up. Can only assume that the weak battery wasn't supplying enough voltage/current to start the car and keep things firing properly and once the alternator got the charge up a bit it was then able to run the car properly.

Nice and simple solution, I like these!

The alternator should take over as soon as the car is running

Just a theory Al, all I know is the new battery has cured the problem and there can't be a fault with the alternator as once jump started that charged the old battery fine, it just wouldn't hold that charge overnight in this cold.
