Tough Getting Into Gear

Recommended Posts

The gearshift gives a fair bit of resistance and is not altogether clean. Would replacing the linkage sort this out or is it a gearbox problem?

Does it feel sloppy and clunky when going into gear? I have something similar and suspect it's the linkage rods saying they need replacing :) You can replace the linkage rods with some decent uprated ones (3 rods) for about £50-55 off either Miles on here or Baker Buches and mountings. It may also be worth changing the linkage bushes (Baker BM do them for £26 minus clb discount) as these are prone to going as well from the info I've read on here.

Another thing to check - is your clutch cable adjusted properly? Before mine snapped the biting point was on the floor. Adjusted it up a little and the gear change was slightly better (but still with knackered rods).

If you have excessive slack in the gear change, check the small pivot on the subframe, these work loose & make a massive diference to the quality of the gear change.

You have to get underneath to get to the nut as it sits through the subframe up inside, its 13mm & a 13mm open ended spanner above

The gearchange on mine was less than ideal for the last few months. I replaced the standard rods & l-linkage bush with uprated ones supplied by Miles on here and the gearshift is spot on now  Not expensive to replace and well worth doing as the standard items that were removed were well past their best

I replaced just the pivot/nut on the subframe as my rods looked ok and I now have a lovely change..

again, thanks to Miles for telling me thats what it could be rather than selling me something I didn't need, saying that I will be purchasing the uprated rods off him in the near future..

After driving it a bit more it seems 1st and 2nd can be "crunchy" and occasionly require a bit of force to get into gear. 3, 4 and 5 are all fine and the gear change itself isn't actually sloppy, pretty tight actually.

Could be the 1st/2nd synchros in the box, they are prone to failing

Worth checking the clutch is disengaging properly first.
