Filling The Gearbox

Recommended Posts

humanz

It's a BE1 box. I'm hoping either I'm going after the wrong bolt, or there's another way I can fill the gearbox.

Is this the right bolt to remove to fill the gearbox?

Taken from under the car, radiator is at the bottom of the pic, methinks.

Please tell me this is the wrong bolt, or there's another way to fill the box. I removed a drain plug at the bottom of the box, and some of the gearbox oil came out. Perhaps a quarter of a quart (i'm no good with imperial measurements). Was hoping to top the 'box back up, but the bolt highlighted in the picture won't budge!!!!!;)

So am I going after the wrong filling point? After having done the searches, was convinced the bolt in the picture is the check level/filling point.

Did I mention it's urgent? Car's in the driveway, and I've got an event tomorrow. Wouldn't want to drive it with so much oil out of the box...

If it is a Be1 box then remove the cable that controls the lift up reverse and fill through there, I can't make out what that bolt is on your pic.

Ok, it's a lift up reverse with the eccentric cam at the bottom of the gearlever...no cable. any other suggestions?

Would that be this tower like structure circled in red?

Or this thing that's partially hidden under the clutch cable, circled in yellow?

I need to leave home shortly...so will check back. According to my Haynes, the bolt I had in the first pic is the filler plug, at the front of the gear box...

sounds likely for a VERY early BE1 box I think, the breather is the bit in your top picture though.

So that's a good point to fill from? Nothing will fall to pieces if I undo that and fill it up?

Yes, a very early 1.9 engine and gearbox...

Yes, this is the correct place to fill the 'box from. ^^

My ride is late, so I managed to get the breather off and poured in the one quart of gearbox oil I have. I only bought one thinking the slow leak I had would mean that there should've been a considerable amount left in the box. Except, I emptied the quart into the box, and oil still wasn't overflowing the breather. Does that mean I need to put in even more? Or would oil only overflow from the filler point I was showing in the first picture?

Draining it and refilling would be the best thing. But this was only supposed to be a stop gap. My mechanic has rebuilt my spare gearbox and is waiting for me to find the money and time to have it installed. I didn't think so much oil had leaked out, so thought the one bottle would've been sufficient to top it up.

Cheers.
