Where do you squirt it in mate? Mine is a bit squeaky on start up.

Take the fan out by unscrewing the three screws holding it in, then squirt it in the bearing.

Done it on mine a while back and lasted a good 6 months before it came back.

Does anybody know if the bearing is replaceable with a standard size bearing?

If I remember correctly, the bearings are sintered bronze bushes, which soak oil up, meaning they stay lubricated for many years....within reason. You need to remove the fan assembly & use a long thin screwdriver to literally drop the oil onto the spindle where it enters the bearings. Ideally 3-in-one oil would be best. WD40 way too thin & engine oil too thick.

It doesn't stop there! You need to let it soak in....then put more on....& then more. Then......do NOTHING. Let it stand for at least 24 hours.....resist temptation to try it! Put some more oil on if after that time it has all soaked in. Then put it back on car & enjoy!

passenger side footwell, get your head in there and look up, you should see the bottom of it from memory one of the screws holding it has a wire clip on it? remove all 3 screws and it should slide down, un-plug the 2 wire plug into motor then you can play around with it to fix squeak, saying that i've never been able to fix the bloody thing!! although saying that, there are 2 small screws that hold the motor into the casing, bit fiddly getting wire through but when you do you have the motor in your hand then you can oil it etc!!

TBH once it starts it will most likely come back soon enough, especially from the heat of the summer.

It would be cheap enough to buy a new one and will last for ages.

My 1986 GT's fan has not worked for two years, i dont drive it much and last week i replaced the resistor plate and it works

perfectly, must be lucky as iv had 6 205's in total and 3 of them have not made any noise.

You can buy them still from GSF, £60 odd quid.

There are actually 2 bearings on the heater blower and to stop the thing squeaking and squealing like a stuck pig, its best to re-oil both of them. Unfortunately, the other one is in the top of the housing (just inside the plastic spinny bit). The only way to get to it is to take the entire thing apart, making it easier to re-oil. You could go out to buy a new one from GSF, but if you've got 30mins to spare, and you aren't scared of taking stuff apart you could save yourself some cash.

Simply remove the blower from the car (3 screws), remove the round metal fixing to the top of the blower, remove the two screws from the bottom and you should be able to pull the thing apart. Make sure you carefully pull the wires through as you pull the main motor out of the plastic casing. The top can be a bastard, so careful not to bend the spindle. Oil or grease (as your preference) the bearings at the top end and the bottom end inside and out just to be sure. Re-assembly is the reverse of assembly.

I've done this on mine (could'nt stand more noise, There's enough rattling and squeaking in these cars as it is), I used grease in the end as its a bit longer lasting than the 3in1 (despite the pictures). I haven't heard a thing since I did this. Here's a few pics I hope this helps, as this seems to be a bit of an issue with 205s.

That's handy BamBam, although, did you mean to use the same file for pic 1 & 3??

Surely it must be possible to replace these bearings?? I oiled mine thoroughly last year and its awful again now.

I got a quote of £15 from my local rotating electrics place to get mine reconditioned, that was before I was aware of the rheostat problems they suffer with. :)

Years later..... my thanks to all posters in this thread, I've just followed the advice and (quite easily) fixed the dreadful noise from my cars fan - cheers, as I now look forward to a quieter time!

Great stuff...but remember to oil and re-oil over a period, let it stand 24 hours, put more oil on, leave it to soak in some more....and only then try running it. The bearings are sintered, so they absorb oil, but need time to do so.

If you just put a few drops on, you're wasting your time, it will run dry in no time. Likewise I wouldn't recommend grease, as it's unlikely to be absorbed by the bearing material.
