Coolant Pipes To Oil Filter Housing

Recommended Posts

pablo

Tidying up the breather pipes etc and thinking of ditching the coolant pipe to the oil filter housing. Are these really needed for a garage queen 205?

Obviously if they serve a purpose Ill leave them as is.

Cheers all.

This acts as a type of oil cooler (water cooled), wouldn't really get rid of them unless your going to replace it with an air cooled unit.

But that means changing the sandwhich plate and oil cooler rad.

There's no need for an oil cooler in the UK climate, unless the car gets too hot.

The water-cooled coolers also work the other way and help the oil get up to temperature quicker, but there's no reason why you can't remove it. I've not had one on my Mi16 for 4 years and never had any problems without it.

I had thought it might have been a heater of sorts (like the heated inlet manifolds on old minis) but then thought why would you want to heat oil when the engine is up to temp? Can understand on startup alright.

The big pipe from the thermostat to the radiator is where it Ts off from. So I guess thats hot water from the engine block heading for the rad to be cooled. After the oil filter housing it goes on to the heater so guess it must be hot.

If I did remove the pipes can I remove the housing too? And screw the filter straight to the block? Would make life easier with rad clearance.

Thanks for the replies guys keep em coming.

Yes. If you take the filter off there's a bolt through the middle of the cooler. Take that off and you can screw the filter straight to the block.

Just gets better! Awesome cheers! More room for a slimline fan in behind the rad.

I get round the oil filter/rad clearance issue by using a Clio oil filter. Purflux LS309 if I remember right,

Once you take the water / oil heat exchanger off you have the same amount of room as the 8v without the oil cooler so there is plenty of space & no need for a shorter filter.

If your Mi has an alloy sump you definately don't need an oil cooler, even if you track it occasionally imo.

its an xu10j2te mate, with alloy sump. Will do the odd trackday but if temps are an issue then Ill reconsider.

I want to get a big intercooler up front so more room behind the rad the better!

ok I got everything removed and now I just have a threaded hole in the block. Do I need a std threaded bar to screw into the block then fit my filter to? Or do I need a different filter?

Cheers.

There should be a threaded insert coming out of the block. Check it didn't come out in the end of the bolt holding the cooler on.

You'll need a shorter boss for the filter alone then in that case, should be available from Pug etc, or someone here may have one.

yeah Ill just order one off Pug. Can pop the std stuff back on for now with the coolant pipes left disconnected.

It's not a bad thing to have for road use only, Forget about it on track thou as the water heats the oil and the oil heats the water so the temps get silly in no time at all.

But as you;ve found out all Iron blocks have this arrangement unlike the alloy block which still use the threaded insert.
