Testing A Coil With Multi Meter

Recommended Posts

splant

Right got my coil off and my cheapo silverline multi meter out ive set it to 20k resistance setting , on this setting when i touch the prongs together it goe to 0.00 now when i touch the prongs to the low tension terminals on the coil it goes to 0.00 in haynes it mentions 6.5 and 0.8 .... whats really strange is whichever low tension terminals i put the prongs on its the same 0.00 as though theyre all joined up in there , this cant be right can it? ,,,,,,,,when i put the prongs on the ht and ANY of the low tension terminals it reads 6.69 , im sure this cant be right can it ?

Its because your testing it wrong. You have put the scale to 20000 Ohms, what your measuring is 5 to 7 Ohms, so as you can see the scale is very wrong. Try putting the meter to 20 Ohm?? maybe and you should get your reading.

The measurement between the Low tension and high tension will be quite high and in your case it is 6.69 thousand or 669000 Ohms which i think is about right.

Hope this explains it a bit.

damn thought i,d found the cause of no spark then.. my multimeter only goes down to 200 ohms and doesnt register anything on that setting, i think its nackered its saying im getting 17v at the pos wires at the coil so cant be very accurate , i,ll source another coil anyways .. cheers

You could try putting the ht lead from the coil to the dizzy, to a spark plug instead. Make sure the spark plug has a good ground then get someone else to turn the engine over, better with spark plugs out. You should see a nice fat regular spark. If you don't then you know its a coil/voltage/ignition module problem. If you are seeing a spark then it could be a dizzy cap/rotor arm/ht lead problem.

Hope this helps a little

yes tried that no spark... my engine managements lights on so was worried it was ecu or lambda telling it not to spark ..im worried about getting wrong coil and that damaging the ecu would it have to be one from a catlyst model..

Lambda has nothing to do with the spark. You could just about put any make of coil on and it would work within reason.

Just to be clear do you have a coil pack (without distributor) or a single coil with a distributor????

If it has a distributor then the ecu has nothing to do with controling the spark, its all done by the dizzy mechanically with a vacuum takeoff attached to the dizzy. All it needs to work is 12v from the ignition switch in reality.

ye s its got a dissy and volts are getting to it 17v by my crappy multimeter jus bought t a cheapo coil off ebay new but budget but at least it corresponds to the part no of the duccellier that ive took off ... let you all know if that cure it ,, just thinking do immobilisers just stop ign coming on and cranking like mine seems to do or stop sparks also ?
