Xsi Wont Start, Crank Sensor

Recommended Posts

efy2bjg

Hi guy's

It's been a while since I've been on here. but I need some advice.

My 106 xsi has been stood for a week and now it wont start. It turns over without a hint of catching at all, the only sign of life has been a rather load backfire out of the exhaust. It has always started on the button so I'm sure its an electrical failure and from my research the crank sensor looks like it is probably the culprit.

Is it possible that the sensor has got dirty/ corroded in the damp weather and I can clean it up? or is it a case of just buying a new one?

Thanks

Ben

To be honest, I haven't actually had a chance to lift a spanner yet! but I wanted to build a plan of attack for the weekend.

From the back fire, I assume I have at least a bit of both :-)

i had a similar problem on my old git 6. turned out it was a broken wire under the carpet.

i'd check for a spaek to start with if all is good check power to fuel pump, need to eliminate at least one of the probs first

Probably the ignition amplifier has gone. Check for spark, its the easiest thing to check, apart for petrol in the tank. ;)

Yeah: do the obvious first:

> Has it actually got fuel?

Then...

> (HT lead off & near something metal) Does it spark on cranking?

If yes to above then it's probably not a management/crank sensor issue.

> (Fuel rail lifted out over some cups or a deep tray) Is it fuelling on cranking?

If no to both the last two, it probably IS a management/CAS issue.

If it's fuelling/spraying, then it's likely an ignition component breakdown/failure (coil/amp/cable).

That's just a general process and should narrow it down. ;)

Right.

I had a look at it this evening and it looks like I have no spark after all. Not at the plugs anyway! As it was dark I could see some sparks around the coil pack at the other end of the ht leads.

Is this normal? It seems to me that if it's sparking at the coil pack then perhaps the leads are shot and the current just isn't getting to the plugs?

Also there was a decent smell of petrol from the open plug hole.

Any ideas?

Fixed.

I changed the coil pack and it's now working :-)

It seems strange to me that the pack would break whilst it was standing, I guess it must have corroded/ the cold damp weather got to it.

Aside from rounding the chocolate torx bolts on the old one it's an easy fix.

Thanks for the pointers guys, no doubt i'll need help again soon.

Ben
