306 Td Killing Alternators

Recommended Posts

djinuk

A friend has offered me a 306 td with mot and tax for £300, i know its a bit banged up but it would be a good runner i believe for work, however he said the alternator failed on it, he replaced the alternator and all was ok for a few days, until it failed again..

Now is it just bad luck that 2 alternators have died or is there a chance somthing is happening to kill these ?

Could be bad luck if the replacement was also a used one, but something worth checking is whether the diesel injection pump above the alternator is leaking - if it is, then it'll be dripping straight into the alternator and that seems to kill them too.

well ive brought the car, stuck a battery on it and drove it home (5 miles) without problem, will sent for the 13.6 volts when running tomorrow to see if the alternator is doing its job.
