Making Up Braided Brake Lines.

Recommended Posts

chrisj21

Hi all

I'm looking into getting all my copper lines relaced with braided items and i'm wondering if anyone has made them up at home.

If i get the lines and fittings from rally design or similar how difficult is it? any special tools required?

Thanks

Chris

I have. They are easy. No tools required really. They say you should use a tool to open the braid to fit the olive but I used a small elecy screwdriver and it did the trick. Proper crimped ones, like Miles sells / has made up to order, are better from what I have read, but the ones I made up on my old rallye were spot on.

Yes i did enquire with miles and thats my second option just wanted to have a crack myself to be honest.

I'm also wanting to route them differently in the bay to give abit of a cleaner look.

Goodridge hose and fittings then or any recommended ones?

The ones I used came from Rally design and worked a treat.

Thats good enough for me then

Just having a look through rally design and they do two sizes of hose 3/8 and 7/16, from memory the copper lines i've had previously were 3/8 so im thinking this will be ok?

Theres also a long list of fittings im trying to get my head around.

You want -3 hose for brake lines.

Would that be AN03 Tom?

Found here at the top of the table hose

Edit: Just found some on Earl's performance, Thanks Tom.

have a look at the stuff available on here http://stores.shop.ebay.co.uk/Torques-U-K__W0QQ_armrsZ1

not sure if they have what you need but you could ask, the shop is run by Alex ("Powers" on here) I haven't bought anything from them yet but Spiky has, on comparing the prices on fuel stuff its very good.

Im looking at runing braided brake lines throughout my 1600 rallycar (1.6 brakes). Can anyone list exactly what fittings i'll need to buy?

It would depend all on how you and where you want to run them.

If running the same as standard just take a look at the likes of rally design and compare what they have to what you have originally. If differently then only you will know what t-pieces/bends etc you will need.

Generally, 205s take M10 x 1mm male fittings with a convex seat but don't quote me on that! :)

The reusable fittings for sale on Rally Design are really good, dead easy to fit and absolutely no reason why anybody can't make them themselves. A couple of tips though, when you cut the brake line wrap the area tightly with electrical tape and cut it with a 1mm cutting disc (on a grinder or a dremel) so you don't fray the braiding. Don't forget to buy PTFE tape either.

Shouldn't use PTFE tape on brake lines. All the fittings should seal either on the cone seat in the bottom of the port, or seal on the face with a copper washer. PTFE is for thread sealing applications, you shouldn't use this on brakes or any other hydraulics come to mention it. Its OK for pipework with gases in, not for fluids under high pressure.

Can't do any harm to use it though, surely?

Probably not, but there is no point.
