Rear Brake Drum Removal...

Recommended Posts

Guest Petenic

Hi ,before i get a chance to have a look ( Friday hopefully...) - can anybody confirm that the removal of the rear drums is via the big 'hub nut' or is there a big circlip holding the drum on , as I've heard conflicting stories.... (my car is a 205 gti 1987)

Thanks

Pete Nic

it'll be the big 32mm nut, the circlip holds the bearing in place.

its a good idea to slacken the handbrake cables off if they have any tension in them, you can also release the shoes further by pushing the lever on the brake shoe with a screwdriver through a wheelbolt hole to allow the lever to move further, details are shown in the haynes manual with some picures to illustrate :)

if the drums are being re-used its a good idea to grind away any lip that may be present to ease removal next time.

And if the drums are worn, if you're not replacing them it might be an idea to file off the lip inside them, for easy removal next time!
