First of all I hope this topic is in the correct forum! Sorry if its not.

Ok my 205 turbo diesel is dying, all be it slowly (he still pulls like a train!) but all good things must come to an end. So I thought about another fun commuter car and then thought PROJECT!

I have a good 306 td at home not doing much and was thinking about putting it to good use.

So the plan is to get hold of 205 gti hopefully 1.9 and prefferably a ph2, that has a knackered engine and needs a general tidy up. This needs to be cheap as I dont want to spend too much. Then I want to drop the 306 td engine in and put a front mount intercooler on and some other bits and pieces. Luckily I as have a intercooler at home. So hopefully I will have a fun car that looks great on the outside, has a pretty good performance but has GOOD MPG!

So im wondering what peoples thoughts are on this. Also some of the problems that will be incountered form changing from petrol to diesel.

I would love to know what people think would be the best combinations, gearboxes, hubs and drive shafts and anything else anyone can think of.

Cheers

Andy

P.S. I know im going to get the "why are you ruining a classic to make a diesel" and such like statements. How I see it I have a mint laser green 1.9 that I love ;) and I am not ruining something that is already in a bad state! Plus if I want to do it I will  Ha ha ha

Having said that I will be greatful for all comments!

A bit like an STDT? They're Ph2, easier to make the swap work, just need to upgrade suspension/ possibly interior, it's not to everyones taste. Plus, you'd pick up a decent STDT for much less than a average GTI.

I would really like to do a high powered Diesel version, 150bhp, excellent economy...

Have thought about 2 routes, GTI or Diesel first, but the STDT is a pretty good car already...

Will wait till I move next year and have a decent garage

Yer like a STDT but with the nicer interior and the suspension is already there. Thats why I thought go with the gti from the off. Saves changing too much. Also I presumed STDT's were getting hard to come by now days.

I would love to get it to high performance. Sounds like it could be a nice little project.

STDT's are plentiful, you just got to look in the right places.

There have been a number of projects on here previously from Petrol to Diesel. I don't think the it's going to be as straight forward as you think, but if you like a challenge then go for it! :)

Cheers for that. I have searched loads on here but couldn't find any info about the conversion. I thought someone must have tried it before.

I will have a good read through.
