Do a search. There have been 30-odd page long threads about tyres recently.

Depends what level of performance you want and how much you want to spend! If you think £48 each is steep then you're probably in for a nasty shock, Yokohama A048's are undoubtedly one of the best track day tyres but are also the most expensive at around £80-90 each. Toyo R888's are cheaper but not quite the same level of performance, a decent compromise. If you're looking to spend £50 max per tyre then you probably aren't going to get much of a performance increase over a good road tyre.

£48 could well be an excellent price, you will have to enlighten us to what make/model of tyre this is though for us to comment properly.

I don't understand that statement, if you are saying they are good for competition, you are presumably saying that you agree the AO48 is a better tyre than the 888, so why would this be a waste of money on a track day?

Because in competition you look for every tenth, on a track day you can rarely get a clean lap enough to make use of the difference, cant use the extra grip to dive down the inside, can rarely use the extra corner speed.

so you might as well use £25 budget tyres on a trackday with that logic then?

Not really, there is a significant difference between a £25 budget tyre that justifies spending an extra £50 on an 888, there isn't as significant difference to an A048R which will cost nigh on double the 888

TBH I think you guys are deliberately dumbing down on this.

What do you use for trackdays Mei and Andy?

I used to use part worn BF Goodrich Profile G's way back in the day. My tyre place used to give me them for a drink and they'd last for a good few days.

Now have a stock of A048's, cost between £10 and £20 part worn and good for maybe a whole day.

Just got to get a car now!

I started off using T1Rs and am now using 888s and found these were much better than the T1Rs.

The 888s are getting worn and I'm thinking of trying some A048s as actually the price difference between the two is getting less.

I appreciate what you are saying about the difference between the two not being that great compared to the difference in cost, but part of the fun of doing track days is trying out different setups and seeing what difference it makes - at least for me I like to go to each track day with at least one thing different on the car!

That's fair enough, how much are you paying for A048R's? Last time I checked they were £150+ each, presumeably they have come down significantly to be close to 888's?

I used to do practice days, which are run under the same rules as competition, ie you can overtake as you would on track, they have proper marshalls, vehicle subject to scrutineering etc, but for those I would use my old competition tyres, same compound, but slightly off their best and tbh I doubt I was good enough to use them beyond their limits in most cases.

You have to be a pretty good driver to be limited by 888's, although naturally, you may find some improvement in A048R's as they will be slightly more forgiving.

DT currently have 195/50/15s at £109.00 each and the same size 888 at £60, so you are right they are still getting on for double so maybe not worth a go.

That was my point really, the price difference for the extra performance is marginal for a track day, I am not disputing they are better, as they are, just you have to be going some to appreciate the increased performance, whereas comparing a normal non compound road tyre to an 888 is almost night and day.

myself, whatever is on the car! mine are in no way track focussed, barely fast road at all.

I will get some part worn AO48's on a spare set of C5 wheels eventually though.

Interesting that at 15 inch, the difference is about £49+vat, for 14 inch wheels, the difference is only £14+vat.

I eat a slice of humble pie for the 14 inch users, as that difference is not significant.
