New Bolts Or Zinc Coated

Recommended Posts

woodsy

hi guys, iam just in the middle of tidying up my front suspension and getting the subframe etc powdercoated.Basically instead of using the old rusty looking bolts to put it back together i was wondering if i should get them zinc coated or just get new ones from dealer.Ones i mine are likes of subframe bolts, wishbone ones etc.Anyone recommend anywhere. Thanks

If I was you I would renew all of the bolts that get subjected to high loads, pinch bolts, wishbone bolts etc... In the group buys section I think Baz is selling Hi tensile jobbies, if not mrswampy defo is (I bought the later, very good)

The rest I would get nickel plated, better corrosion restiance than zinc I think. Bolts from pug are pretty expensive (some of the beam ones Ive bought recently were £4 + each!)

If you are going to change all the bolts spend a few £££ extra and get stainless ones where possible. I have a guy close by to me that specialises in bolts who helps me out. Some of the bolts will be an odd thread size so if you are getting them zinc coated, dip them in hydrochloric acid 1st and take any bits of paint/dirt off them before sending them to get plated. Thats what I do and then you get a real good finish on them. I'd advise getting a bag of 7mm lock nuts from pug themselves for the strut tops. You can't plate lock nuts so just renew. Hope that helps you out.

Nuts with nylon lock style?? The nylon melted in a few I had accidently put in a tub of bolts that went to get plated.

I wouldnt use stainless bolts on any stressed bolts, its no where near as strong as mild steel and could break in use.which realy isnt what you want.

If you can get a list of specs of what you want then i can supply them and most of the time they will be in a bright zinc plate

as merlin said i have supplied alot of people with ball joint and shock absorber pinch bolts

i also have stock of m7 nylocs

Hi guys, thought i would post pic up of spare subframe my mate powder coated for me and the antiroll bar.I also derusted the wishbones and hubs as hammerite just

flakes of after while.I bought some POR 15 paint which is brilliant stuff although very thin, even on tin it says when dried no solvent will remove it haha.Just got to sort gettting all the bolts cleaned etc now and can go back together then its tidying up the brake callipers.
