Psa Hdi Broke Down

Recommended Posts

dino20vt

My mates just rang me to say his Picasso has been recovered by the AA who say it's a faulty injector pump.

Is it under the bonnet?

Is it easy to change ie plug and play not belt driven?

Are they expensive?

Are they used on any other diesel engines (preferably a Renault Laguna 2) as I have one spare, but both cars are miles away so can't check.

Cheers

I'd double check that the actual injector (high-pressure) pump has failed as that's quite rare.

The in-tank lift (low-pressure) pump however is a common failure, as is the relay that controls it.

Easiest check is to unplug the fuel line that goes to the fuel filter (the feed from the tank) and aiming it in a suitable receptical, crank the engine over - fuel should pour out. If it doesn't, then chances are either the pump is goosed, or the relay.

To check the intank lifter pump you don't even need to crank the engine, simply turning the igntion on to the second click & the pump should prime for a few seconds.

But if it doesn't prime check its not the double injection relay before condeming the pump.

Like Anthony says, the high pressure pumps are pretty strong so I'd be surprised if it has failed.

They are driven by the cambelt & not particularly cheap, also check if its a Bosch or Siemens unit if it needs replacing.

Graham.

Thanks for the prompt replies, now at home and have proper internet access I've just checked eBay and I see what you mean about the high pressure pump, it looks a very sturdy piece of kit, so it probably will be the relay or the intank pump. Don't suppose anyone knows of it's location on a Picasso?

Its in the fuel tank so I'd expect it'll be the same as on the 306 / Xsara which is under the r/h rear seat base.

If you have an owners manual it might show you in there. :)

IIRC you have to drop the tank down to get the lift pump out... I have done a few but it was a while ago... be careful about the tankstrap bolts they shear very easily!

Sorry meant the location of the relay!

if i remember correctly it should be beside the ecu in the engine bay... the same as the brown fuel pump relay in the 306s and stuff....

Just been around my mates.... No pump priming and the relay is clicking, hex just rang the main dealers and a new relay is £14 so going to swap that and see what happens. Failing that the next things to check I think will be see if fuels arriving at the engine bay, if not drop the tank and check if power is reaching the pump, if not new pump, eBay sell them at £120 for genuine item, the dealer wants £180.

Can't speak for a Xsara Picasso, but on a 306 the relay is next to the ECU in the engine bay - looks very similar to the injection relay on GTi-6's etc but is a different pinout. The pump is in the fuel tank, but can be accessed/removed by lifting the rear seat and the plastic cover.

Relay is £13 odd from the dealer, and cheapest place for a 306 pump was EuroCarParts at about £90 odd from memory.

There should be two 12v feeds to the pump - one for the pump itself (live when priming, and when cranking/running), and one for the level sender which is built into the pump (live with ignition on).

You can bridge the pins on the relay to send power to the in tank lifter pump, pins 5 & 8 of the relay plug which should be in the engine bay next to the ecu.

Just swapped the relay, still wouldn't start and shorted 5 and 8 on the plug, something clicked around the ecu area but no pump priming. Does the tank really need dropping to change the pump? Stupid design if it does!

it is fitted into the top of the tank, so if you have no holes in the floor under the seas I'd imagine dropping the tank would be the only way at it.

Stupid question - does it actually have an in-tank lift pump? Everyone seems convinced it does so perhaps it does. What I can tell you is the PSA DW10 2.0L in a Mondeo or Galaxy/S-Max does not have an in-tank pump.

I have done a few and yes they do have the pump.... and yes I pulled the carpet up and removed the seats etc to try and get in... ended up having to drop the tank...

On the original DW10's (the 90bhp and 110bhps SOHC versions) there were 2 types of ECU used, Siemens 801 or Bosch EDC15C2. The Bosch has a in tank lift pump but the Siemens setup does not.

My autodata (up to 2004) only lists the Bosch system for the Xsara Picasso.

All sorted now, thanks for all the replies, swapped the intank pump, had to remove the tank and exhaust but kept the handbrake cables still attached and slid the tank out of the side.
