How Deep Can A Sunstrip Legally Be?

I need to put a sunstrip on my 309 as it's caged. The car needs to be road legal but I'd like it as low as possible.

 

Are there any rules about this?

AFAIK, in theory if the wipers do over it then it's an MOT fail (and thus one assumes illegal)

 

(hence people removing them or fitting smaller wipers come MOT time)

According to this the official rule is if it encroaches more than 10mm into wiper area in zone A - that is the area directly in front of the driver, then it is an fail. You can always solve this by fitting a shorter wiper blade for the MOT.

MIne encroaches very deep as I have no visor's. Probably over 70mm into the swept area. Now gone through three MOT's with this on, all differing garages.

 

The rules are I believe it should not enter the swept area, but they would have to be pretty hot on to pull you on it!

9 times out of 10 it's down to the tester's interpretation of the rules, and his mood / opinion of your car. Its good to know the rules though, as if you know you comply then you can always challenge them if they fail you.

Why do people fit smaller for the MOT only? Surely you might as well leave them on 247 as you don't need to clear water off the part of the screen you can't see through anyway?!

I have a single wiper so if I fit shortened wipers permanently then the edge of the wiped area is right in front of me and it gets on my tits.
