Fuel Pump Always On..

Recommended Posts

springs

Since i've owned the car the fuel pump is always on, Now didnt really take much notice as i had always got into the car and started the ignition. When its been for its MOT a while back i was there watching it and when he had just the accessories on all you could hear was the pump. He did mention this afterwards and thought i better sort it at some point.

Does this sound like a dodgy pump? and if so are they easy to change?

Won't be the pump itself - after all, the pump only works when it's supplied power - and it shouldn't be getting power without the engine running.

Assuming it was like this before the GTi-6 conversion, it sounds to me like someone has lashed up the wiring somewhere, probably as a "fix" to a faulty fuel pump relay previously. Finding the lashup is usually the challenge, but a good place to start is the fuel pump fuse (nearest one to the driver, should be a blue 15amp one) and see if the pump still runs with that unplugged.

I had a similar problem when i bought mine few months ago - ended up being faulty fuel pump relay! Dont get one from Peugeot though - about £90 plus vat!!! Try a local motor factors or similar - found brand new pattern one for £20 all in!

Hope that helps!

does anyone know which relay is for the fuel pump? Haynes didn't really give me much info about the relays..

The large brown one on the GTi-6 loom (it's a double relay that powers both the ECU and fuel pump). None of the relays on the fuseboard are anything to do with the fuel pump.

The fuel pump fuse (15 amp) normally goes in the right hand slot where one end of that bodged in cable is.

Only thing is if you change it the wiring might not work, easy to sort if you know what wires you need to connect.

You seem to be missing a relay too

I may have a 'similar' problem. Sometimes when starting the car from warm I don't hear the fuel pump priming but the car starts fine! Does that mean the relay is stuck open from previous time?!

I haven't looked at it yet but can i take a guess that if i was to put the fuse in properly it might work as it should? It's been like this since it was originally a 1.6 8v and as far as i was told the 6 engine never had any fuel pump problems..

It does look as if Billy the Bodger has paid a good old visit. The fuel pump relay normally lives next to ecu on the right of the steering wheel. I would try putting it back to standard and the diagnosing it from there, if the pump does'nt run. The pump running all the is would be dangerous if you had an accident.

The GTI6 fuel pump wire may not even be connected? and maybe why the loop of wire used?

But as said the Output from the GTi6 relay is easy to find if it isn;t connected

Feb, The relays don;t always prime so it's never a issue

Think i have sorted this now

when Anthony said that the pump relay was on the engine loom i decided to remove the bodged wiring and put a fuse in its place. seemed to have worked. fuel pump starts on the second turn of the key instead of always on..
