205 Gti-6 Coolant..

Recommended Posts

springs

I've been trying to sort my coolant out on my 205 gti-6 for a while and had to change over a thermostat housing because i broke the bleed screw.

Now i have replaced that and went to tackle to cooling. I've had the car sat idle for about an hour to warm up and circulate. I checked the 2 bleed points and water came out of both of them.

basically when i was watching it the needle went upto the 3rd big tab and slowly came back down again and then slowly back up. When i turned the engine off the fan was on and turned off again, which i guess is fine and the fan sensor is saying its at an ok temp?

When i came back from the MOT last time, when i was about 3/4 of the way home the temp gauge shot up, which i got home asap and stopped the engine, some steam was coming out of the engine bay. now the current set-up looks to be holding fine for at least an hour at idle.

Im really only asking if this all sounds fine etc, as it needs the retake its MOT and if all passes fine possibly a trip up to Coventry next week. I cant really drive it as there is no TAX or MOT on the car.

that is exactly where my gti6 used to sit in heavy traffic or after letting it idle for 10 mins.

they are very un accurate readings anyway so wouldnt worry at all. only worry when the light comes on tbh! even then, just get some air passing through and all will be fine :D

That's about the same as my (standard) 205, so you should be fine! My second stage fan kicks in when it hits the third big mark, then cuts off once it drops to the fourth mark so it tends to see-saw between the two when stuck in traffic.

My gti6 also goes to the third line in traffic or if it's been idling for a long time. Fan cuts in after this, which immediately brings it down again. Also, mine only ever seems to need the "first" stage of the fan speed to bring the temp down. So what you describe seems normal.

My 205 Gti6 does exactly like everyones above - goes upto the 3rd big mark, fan kicks in and then goes down to the smaller mark to the left at which point the fan turns off. Then repeats. This it has done for ages with no problems, same with the 1.9 8v as with the GTi6 16v lump.

HOWEVER, recently my 205 occasionally gets a bit hotter. Found the culprit to be dodgy wiring to the plug for the radiator fan switch (blue plug on passenger side of radiator). If you just gently touch it its enough to disconnect / reconnect it. It'll need rewiring sometime, but I haven't done it yet as I can't drive it at the moment anyways.
