Wiper Motor Upgrade

Recommended Posts

james_ix

Hello Everyone

I wonder if anyone has upgraded their front wiper motor? The one on my 205 works but could be better!!

I seem to remember an article talking about changing the unit to one from a 306, with some modifications needed. Does anyone know of this article and link me to it?

If not can anyone point me in the right direction for a better solution

or

Are there other options to get a better wiper speed?

Thanks

James

Have a search as there's been a good few topics on here about this.

I think a 106 motor is nearly a direct fit though.

I used a 106 motor, check my posts/threads. iirc, the only differece is the electrical conector.

Xsara (and thus I assume 306) wiper motors also fit, you just need to change the connector over.

I've got one from a 106 GTi & its a direct fit, plugged straight in & nothing needing changing.

Anthony and Graham, did you just use the motor from the 106/xsara retaining the 205 linkage/mechanism or did you also use the linkage/mechanism from the 106/xsara?

Ive got a 405 one installed on mine. Normal 205 motor is mounted in a 8-2 o'clock angle where the 405 needs to be mounted on the plate in a 10-4 o'clock if that makes sense  . Only major mod is to swap the wiper drive spindle, the 205 is a smaller diameter but easy enough.

I've fitted a 306 motor to mine, much better than the standard one. Iirc you use the 205 linkage and as others have said just swap the connectors over.

IMO its not noticably faster but it does work better & both speeds have a noticable difference although I have some retro fit flat wiper blades on so it might suffer extra drag from them at higher speeds but hey work ace.

I used the 205 linkages etc but the 106 motor bolted to the 205 mount by the three M6 10mm bolts.

Fitting the Xsara / 306 motor would take a bit of modding imo, they are more of a complete assmbly that you remove from the car to get to the motor iirc.

they are more of a complete assembly to remove from the car yes, but they're still bolted to a plate with the three 10mm bolts.

Yeah but the spacing would be different due to the difference in shell width, screen size etc I expect so it wouldn't be a simple bolt on job.

IIRC, they are almost the same. I swapped it myself and the only thing to do apart from unbolting and bolting was to reconnect it to the 205 plug.

yep, exactly what I meant, just unbolt and its the same motor, you discard the rest of the linkage to the scrap pile/I'll use that sometime in the future pile/shed :)

I know they are the same sized motor, I meant the whole wiper assembly wouldn't be an easy fit into a 205 shell (the parts Meirion mentions scrapping).

Yeah i doubt very much you'd get the whole lot to fit. Mine is a bit quicker than the 205 motor, maybe yours is down to the blades graham?

Yeah, I reckon it is because its a comparable speedto the wipers on my 306 that also has the retro fit flat blades on.

Cetainly better than the original motor anyway.

Thats good to know-went out this weekend to scappers to find a 106 motor as old one needed a tap everytime to get it started! Not ideal everytime venturing under the bonnet when ripping it down to get wipers working! :D

Thanks to all who added to this thread and to round off my original question. A 106 front wiper motor has been fitted with the result been much stronger and faster wiper blade action

The physical fitting of the replacement motor was simple with all the bolt holes aligning and the wiring plugs going straight together. The only modification that I had to make was to the back of the wiring plug (the clip that goes through the plug mounting plate) this just needed filing down so the rotor arm cleared it. Everything else just bolted together.

Just one note scribe or mark the rotor arm and the motor mounting plate before beginning to ensure that the wiper start and stop positions are repeated.

I also fitted the Citreon (Xsara) washer nozzles which give a broad spray pattern and a wider coverage of water spray over the screen. A huge difference over the original jets and a cheap mod.

Were the Xsara washer jets brand new? If so do you have a part number? :)

Thanks for the update on this James. I shall go and look for a 106 motor and some Xsara jets! Thanks.

I'd strongly advise against Xsara/307 mist type jets. I'm going to bin mine and go back to standard nozzles.

Mine worked OK when originally fitted because my bonnet hinges were broken so the bonnet sat up slightly at the back. Now that the hinges are fixed and the bonnet sits as it should, the jets fire straight in to the wiper baldes (probably made worse by the chunky modern aero blades). They are absolute dog s*it now.

I recon you may be OK if you have the normal old fasioned wiper blades, and depending on how your bonnet sits. But that's part of the problem, because build quality means everyones bonnet will fit slightly different, so those who've had no problems with these jets have probably just been lucky.

I've also heard that having an auto bonnet results in them firing straight at the wiper blades.
