Advice On Reuniting Gti6 Head And Block

Recommended Posts

chrisj21

After having my head refurbished on my GTI6 engine i now need to reunite it with the block.

I'm looking for some advice on the way it needs to be timed up and the best way to go about it, or is it just as normal as doing an 8v?

Any tips/help much appreciated.

all fairly straightforward, just take great care with the head that you don't knock a valve or let the camshafts move or to rotate them a full turn as they can clash with each other.

this post has a lot of good information - http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/index.php?showtopic=94227

also, as Bas mentions in his post, check that the harmonic damper has not slipped, i.e the outer section of the crank pulley, IIRC the timing pin should be 70 degrees away from the woodruff slot, an 8 valve solid bottom pulley can be used to time them up if youre unsure.

Thanks for that link welshpug, i missed that somehow.

With regards to the harmonic damper, would this have been affected when the cambelt snapped? i.e would it have slipped?

I was thinking of getting one of Richw lightweight bottom pulleys, possibly easier to time it up with one of those?

Also do i need to fill up the hydraulic lifters manually?

Cheers

Chris

Never touched the hydraulic tappets myself, just left them in place so they didn't drain, if yours have been out I would follow any re-assembly advice regarding them :)

The timing belt snapping wouldn't damage the crank pulley, its just the rubber between the two halves degrading, RichW's pulley would solve any issues there.

I wouldn't fill the lifters manually, as you may put too much oil in them. They fill pretty quickly once you have oil pressure anyway.
