When you say strong, do you mean of unburned fuel?

This is a lower model/carbed model dash.

Has your car been converted from a carbed model to 1.9 previously and the old dash left in??

well ive always thought it was a straight 1.9 dimma as it says gti on the log book and its got the dimma plaque under the bonnet but my dash is different to that 1 aswell mine has the oil temp gauge and oil presure guage

Aren't all the rear of the dashes the same?

Perhaps someone has put a bulb in there that doesn't need to be?

The GTI dash does have the choke light on it, but it's not wired up to anything, just a loose connection under the dash.

Sounds like somebody thought it should be plugged in to something - usually the earth block under the steering column.

It's a single yellow spade connector, with iirc one or two yellow wires going into it.
