Hard Gearchange When Hot!

Recommended Posts

reno9

Hello,

my 205 1,9 have such a problem that with cold motor gearchange is ok but when its hot then gears goes little hard. Oil is Shell SF5288 75W80 witch is in the manual too. Can it be only oil problem or is there any other bits to check? Everybody recommend here Total BV.

Does linkage bronze bushes makes any difference?

Other thing: how to correctly adjust clutch cable - how long should be the pedal play?

Think you should have your pedal just a slight bit higher than your brake pedal, I had mine set to my own personal comfort though.

As for the hard gear change, it could be a badly adjusted clutch, not enough oil? (I am sure these need 2 or maybe 2.4 litres)

Sorry its a little hard to help diagnose a problem like this without seeing it.

Check the L bar/leaver , if it's dried and with the presence of heat from the exh. manifold it could make gear changes a little bit stiff .. remove the L bar off from the subframe and apply grease (copper grease) on the moving/sliding area of the bar and the bushes as well .. do the same with all the gear linkage rods , remove them and grease up ball ends of the rods .. refit back , check for free play (especially gear selector arm on the gearbox) and try it out

I already said ,I would check the clutch cable adjustment. I had a problem like this (i had no locking nut on the cable adjuster) the cable would go slack. When cold no problem after about 10 miles it would become very hard to change gear, after resetting the adjustment it would be fine.

I think the oil level should be 1.7l but I know people put 2l in and have no problems.

Definitely check this, I've seen it a few times.

Thanks a lot. I already greased these ball joints and no result. I'm going to adjust clutch cable.

How long should be free movement of clutch pedal? i think mine its too long.

Have you checked the L arm is pivoting freely as Damir suggested? Take the rods off and check it moves freely on the subframe.

Today I checked that L arm looks like it stucked - I took it off and cleaned and greased it. Now it move freely but I need to go road test. I think I order all new parts there but is these bronze bushes are really better or new original bushes are ok?

i would recomend the phospher bronze bushes kit. as i have the same problem your describing and by changing the bushes first time with o.e ones they lasted about 3 months before going stiff again.

i did go the whole hog and change to a set of miles gear rods at the same time but i must say the gear change has never been better.

What kind of exhaust manifold you have? I have Raceland steel one - its going very hot around it.

But I think I get OE size bronze bushes - kit is little too expensive 25£ its not reasonbly priced. For now I got full set OE stuff, but I let you know.
