Fitting A Gti6 Engine

Recommended Posts

Rolando

i've already fitted my gti6 engine and its all up and running but since i've been on here i'm not too sure i've gone the right way with the mounts/clearence on the manifold.

i'm using standard 205 gti mounts but with the lower fork extended by about 12mm, making the manifold clear the bulkhead. is that ok?

just that i've seen some people lower the engine using rs2000 engine mounts or cutting and welding the manifold but still using the standard mounts?

just been thinking what with my way, isnt it putting straine on the driveshafts?

thanks Ro

A lot have fitted it the same as you.

Not heard of any failiures of drive shafts.

Personally, I used standard mounts and cut the bulkhead.

Proper way is to re-angle the exhaust manifold, changing mounts and tilting puts the sump too low IIRC making it a bit hit and miss over those lovely speed cushions that are so popular all over the country now.

:D

Or cut a bit off the bulkhead then shape and weld a bit of steel there then you can keep the original shaped manifold, so there wont be much

of a loss of power or other re-angled manifold problems that can occur. To re-angle the engine which imo can cause

more problems.

Or the Irish and by far the easiest method, a big hammer.

As long as you dont make a complete hash of reangling the manifold you wont see a loss of power. Considering Maxi is running the best part of 250 NAhp through a reangled Gti6 manifold, i doubt you would see a difference on a standard engine. The only downside with keeping the engine at the standard angle and height is you will have to fiddle the master cylinder clearance. But this varies wildly from car to car and isnt hard to rectify.

As above, I've seen the RS2000 mount and unless you drop the gearbox this is a bodge and it brings the sump below the grounding out line of the car, Even with the engine ta the std height you just get minor scrap's

I'm about to do this so are we saying that using the ford mount isn't the best way even if you lower the gearbox too?

Is using standard mounts and re-aligning the master cylinder the best way?

That is how Miles did mine.

i have found this can vary from vehicle to vehicle.

i have tilted mine by about 7 degs by extending the lower fork and still had problems with mc clearance so i tilted the mc mount and shaved some off the cam cover too.

i also bashed the seam on the tunnel flat to gain some more clearance around the exhaust manifold.

its not been out on the road yet but fingers crossed it should be ok.

also has bbm mounts all round to stiffen things up

Thats good enough for me then! :)

With regards to the exhaust, i think i'll get one of Miles re-angled ones.

Although Dan Taylors was f'ing Mint as well!

Took hman205 for a spin today, he will testify how smooth and grunty mine is! As well as how factory the install looks in the flesh.

Miles did a stunning job.

The conversion looks spot on and the exhaust clearence perfect.

Have you any closer pictures of the master cylinder clearence at all?

I can take some tomorrow, but as the engine mounts settle it will increase a bit.

At the moment it slightly rubs on the belt cover, which is not really a huge issue.

Feels really weird braking into right handers when your master cylinder is rubbing the cover!
