Preload On Quaife Differential Bearings

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I've never installed one of theese diffs into a pug box but I can see that the casing has a shoulder on one side for the bearing track to sit against and the other side is open, which leads me to think that there must be a tool which you apply to the other track to preload the tapper rollers with before you finaly tighten the case down.

Anyway, like I said I've never done one so I may well be way off the mark.Just cant get past it that there must be a preload for the bearings, how much is it,and how is it applied?

Anybody who can point me the right way,and it would be great.

All the best

O.T.

Ive fitted a few of these and had my own in and out many times for servicing. Never pre loaded just made sure the bearing and race were sat nicely before tightening hard up!

As far as I can remember only very early BE gearboxes needed the preload shims behind the speedo housing adjusting in size (not present on later boxes), later ones were all machines to suit, stick it all together and see if it turns easily or not.

I also thought this the first time I built one. I'm used to Mini gearboxes which are very sensitive to getting the diff preload right. But it seems that these boxes do not need any special procedure, the end cover when bolted up obviously does enough to keep the outer races in place.

Unless it's e early box as said or a later BE3 (As found from around 1996) thats the only time you need to shim the Diff to suit as te speedo housing does this

When mine was put together there was no problem bearings on in housing and just make sure it all turn nice and freely.
