Timing Belt Gone......what Do I Need To Look Out For When Repairing Da

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

This is a not in relation to a 205 but it is still French!

I have a W reg Megane Scenic and the timing belt has snapped.

The Renault garage which diagnosed it think the water pump failed leading to the snapping of the belt.

I asked the mechanic who thinks the following needs doing (est 12hrs labour):

1) Remove head

2) Replace bent valves

3) Replace timng belt

4) Replace water pump

From that, it seems all I need is new valves, new timing belt kit and a new water pump.

I asked him about pistons being damaged and he said it would be unlikely.

What other parts might be needed such as seals/ gaskets etc?? I have never done engine work like this so am keen to learn.

Failing this I will just sell it for spairs or repairs as its too good to just scrap!

Thanks,

Matt

My ex nextdoor neighbours' Renault Laguna water pump failed and ended up with bent valves as well as cracked valve guides.

Price the job up and see what the availability of the parts from aftermarket sources, couldnt get a lot of the parts from ECP and GSF then so had to deal directly with the local Renault dealer who were fecking asking for something stupid like £15 a head bolt as I recall, that was nearly 7 years ago. Cost about £700 to get the car back on the road and that was just parts! :P

Taking into consideration the time and money involved you be better off sourcing a known good replacement engine and replacing the water pump/belts/tensioners. :P

The parts actually seem pretty cheap and all are available on ECP. The list is:

Timing belt kit: £67

Water pump: £25

Valves: £6

Will it need a new head gasket aswell?

My dad seems to think that if the water pump has failed, there could be a problem with over heating and seizing the engine?

Best to get a Head gasket set, normally includes H/G, stem seals, inlet and exhaust manifold gasket, probably have to buy the headbolts seperate.

Take the head off and strip it to assess the damage to the head, pistons and liners. Then price it up.

yup couldnt agree more .if the water pump has failed it has either fell off or seized up nothing to do with it overheating but still you should always replace the headgasket if your taking the headoff . i have never worked on one of these. but 12hr labour there might be a reason for this what engine is it and how crammed in there is the engine .if these are similar to citroen synergie or the pug equivelent it`ll be a c*nt to do .

oh and plus the price of a pressure test and skim on the head usually around 60-80 quid

depends which engine it is and what the supplies are like your way, it may be cheaper to source another engine and do a straight swap, with a new belt and pump of course, possibly clutch if its dubious.

done a few recently where the cost of an engine is less than the cost of time to strip the dead engine diagnose source parts and rebuild, when you can swap the whole engine if a few hours.

Its a 1.6 16v Petrol. Think its the K4M engine.

I don't really have the resources to lift an engine out and I would be dubious obout buying another engine which could break just as easily or not even work in the first place!
