What Other Alternators Would Fit An Mi (1.9)?

Recommended Posts

Sorry everyone, I'm being a total hypocrite as far as the search function goes! I spent ages reading through piles of topics about alternators last night, but I can't remember everything I've read.

I need to replace the alt on my 1.9 Mi. Danpug has offered one from a 1.8 16v. I'm pretty sure I read that the later 16v ones don't fit. Just want to verify that.

Again, sorry for raking over old ground but I genuinely don't have much time right now and just need to get some progress on sourcing a replacement.

All I can verify is that the spacing on the iron-block alternator bracket is completely different to that on the 1.9 alloy 8v, so I could not fit my 8v alternator onto my S16 block. So I guess it works the other way, but since there are so many model varieties on the XU10 there may be some that used a similar-spaced alternator. So I can't say for definite that ALL later 16v alternators don't fit, but certainly some of them won't, so potentially tread carefully...

I'm sure someone will come along with a 100% answer soon, but hopefully the above helps you a little :D

I managed to fit a 406 1.8 16v alternator to my Mi, required a slightly shorter belt but otherwise went straight on. Mmm.. 95 amps. :)

From experience...

1.6 and 1.9 8v ones fit, but you'll need to use a narrower belt.

1.8D/TD ones fit, although you'll possibly need to use a narrower belt.

1.9D/TD generally fit (or certainly early ones do), although depending on age you might need to change the connectors

2.0 8v ones fit, although you'll need to change the wiring connectors over

Later XU7/10 16v and GTi-6 alternators are a different fitment and won't fit without hacking about the mounts significantly.
