Major Loss Of Power

Recommended Posts

will.m

I bought my 205 1.9 gti a couple of months back, ran very well, very quick, needed a few bits replacing such as water pump, cambelt, alternator belt. Ran fine after those parts were replaced but was pinking a little bit, since then the pinking has got worse, and there has been a large noticable loss of power over the past 2 weeks.

The only changes undergone in the car over the past couple of weeks are an amp and subwoofer in the boot.

I cant understand that this much loss of power is just due to pinking, ive had a mechanic try and sort it out but its come back since.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, and im not sure if any other info is required :)

Hmm, is your dizzy tight? I would see if retarding the spark some will stop the pinking?

Also, who did the cambelt? Was it tight enough (slipped a tooth or two?)

Could be loads of things, but any MAJOR loss of power should be easy to find.

That was my first thought too. Rather suspicious its low on power after a cambelt change.

How old is it? does it have a catalytic converter?

Haynes suggests taking the car for a spin after doing a cambelt, then re-tensioning. I was shocked at how slack the belt was after I did this.

Cat suggestion is a goodun

Slipped tooth is my bet tho.

CPR Performance had a fiddle with the distributor, but the pinking came back shortly after. Its got really bad, i can hear it really badly inside the car now. I'll ask him to have a look again, i was thinking he messed something up during the cambelt change perhaps.

Its a 1989 1.6 with a 1.9 lump put in, no cat

Thanks for all the help people!

I know this might sound really stupid but when a freind of mine had a cambelt changed the garage fitted the dizzy back to front lol and that was pinking really bad then went away then came back but it was also spitting flames just a thought if your garage doesnt know 205s
