Noisey Piper Cam

Recommended Posts

johnrobertgordon

The car I am currently working with has either a piper fast road or the ultimate fast road cam. Engine is a standard XU9. The cam was noisey when we picked the car producing a very heavy rattle sound. The cam was re shimed acording to Piper's set tolerances which are well within peugeots limits, howerver even after the re shim the cam is still making a lot of noise.

This cam has only about .5 extra lift but has a rather long duration. Is this tapping noise just the slap due to the long duration and somthing that will have to be lived with? Has anyone else had this?

Thoughts and ideas welcome.

John

New cam on old buckets? Not run in correctly? Is there any wear on the cam lobes and/or buckets? Try inlet 0.010" and exhaust 0.012". The exhaust will be noisey if on the upper limits of the std. clearance.

As peter says peugeot limits are a touch wide, also see puma racing for his advice on clearance, I followed that and pretty much normal noise on a 282 12mm lift cam, you do get a bit more noise though, but more whizzy I found.

As James has said, my Piper cam makes more noise than my standard one did. Have checked and rececked the clearences and they are fine.

I set mine to 0.20 and 0.40 and it was fine, apart from not having enough compression to idle properly, or do much below 2k

Faster take up ramps perhaps, I'd follow peterts advice on the tighter clearances, personally I set the 405 to 0.15 and 0.30, runs like a sewing machine.

Ours is set in old money (thou) but translates too,

inlet 0.25

exhaust 0.38
