I would like to peoples opinions of the best way of making a 205 secure from the scum of society.

Ideally things that put them off even trying and bending doors, smashing glass etc.

There is so much stuff out there, but I doubt most of it would be that effective and I bet there's a few homemade devices out there as good as anything.

Personally I expect the best thing would be a couple of devices

Sorry if this has been covered recently

Unplug tachymetric relay or chain it to the ground

I think the highly visible but somewhat unwieldy Disklok's are a great deterrent.

Luke I would drown before I could undo either of those on a night like this ;)

My car has an alarm on it, which works. Also when I leave it overnight or in a bad area I immobilise it myself so if someone did break in they wouldnt be able to drive it away.

If your ECU is in the standard position you could maybe remove that each time you park the car in a bad area? Bit of a pain though, best to find something smaller which still prevents the engine from starting.

Like an ignition lead, or fuse.

You will be wanting a Invader 2000 Alarm They have the facility to record and personalize your alarm

Invader Alarm Demo click here

And as said those Disklok's are a pretty good visual deterrent too

another vote for the disclock here, though they may not be failsafe, they are a very visible deterrent and that's all you need, if they really want it they'll have it.

I find that keeping my car looking like a complete bag of s*it seems to be pretty effective.

Wouldn't work outside of London though as the pikeys would have it away.

My car has a good immobiliser but as above, a visible deterrent is often the best but there is always the fuel pump relay, fuel pump fuse, coil plug or many other little things we know about that would immobilise the car but like Meirion says, if they want it bad enough they'll get it somehow anyway.

Or the handbrake/gearlever lock thingy too.

Even just a flashing light is a good deterrent.

There great right up until the moment you pull the gear knob off allowing you to just take it off.

lifeline qr boss and immobiliser switch ftw

But you can't get enough movement on the handbrake, or between the gear lever and handbrake to remove it even with the gearknob removed, well with mine you can't.

Cat1 alarm immobiliser, and a disklok, leave the door unlocked.

If they don't see the disklok, at least they wont have to damage the car to trigger the alarm.

The above ^^^ sounds about the best way imo - as long as you dont keep any valuables in your car.

One good point about living in Guernsey, very very VERY few pikey scum lords!!

Alarms are a complete waste of time over here, any Guernseyman who hears a car alarm reacts to it being an invasion of their cat nap and wishes someone would shut the chuffing thing up whilst tryin to nod back off. Poeple take more notice of an annoying nifty 50 buzzing scooter than a ear piercing car alarm

I have never seen a glimpse of panic in anyone when they hear a car alarm in Guernsey, LOVE IT

Not much help i know but sorry i had to say it

I think immobiliser would be the way, who wants to start faffin round under the bonnet everytime they leave or arrive at the car and we all know what the great british weather is like

A friend had her Orion nicked so when she got it back, they wired in a standard front fog lamp switch as a fuel fuel pump cut off. It was nicked again, but they only managed to get 20 yards down the road and left it abandoned. I know it won't stop entry to the car, but a least they won't get far with it.

Some good stuff mentioned, thanks

Keep it coming please.

I do love the idea of the removable steering wheels, but can you put a padlock or similar on the end of the bare shaft with the wheel removed so it can't be put back on?, I know some of the time the wheel would be left in the car.

Anyone had any experience with the device that locks your gearstick in one position, quite a major install I understand.

Gearlocks are pretty effective (needs welding to the floor, for the guarantee it must be a authorised PRO who fits it):

The handbrakes to gear lever locks from Autolok, if fitted properly work generally rather well:

The problem I have with remote control car alarms is, anyone who has the keys can get in the car and drive off. One of the most common ways to steal a car now is to steal the keys first! That is why I like a touch key immobiliser and saw them quite a lot when working in car salvage. This way if someone has your keys they need to find the touch key point first, and if they break into you car without the keys it's not just a switch that they can find, they actually need the keys. So they work well in both situations.

One problem with car alarms is that if the battery is disabled the alarm turns off and if they are professionals, they will trailer/tow or push the car away to have more time to steal it properly, so a good back-up battery alarm works a treat and will really piss off the sticky fingered git when the alarm doesn't stop.

http://www.abacuscaralarms.co.uk/alarms/meta/hpa.htm

One common problem is, thieves breaking in, to steal valuables; snatch and grab jobs if you will. These thefts are generally quick and they don't want to hang around, so stopping them can be fairly easy as you need to slow them down and they'll give up pretty quick. Window film can do a fantastic job and will slow any form of thief, whether it's for the car or valuables, if they are using the universal key that is.

I think that's it for me, hope this helps.

Geoff

Got one of these removable steering wheels on the dimma when the wheel comes off theres a little lock barrel that you can put back on which stops the wheel being put back on.

Is theft of 205s really that common? Most seem to struggle to get £1000 for a legitimate sale so it's hardly going to attract the professional thief. Joyriders nowadays want a Mimbonka Shibitsu Turbo 2000 and don't even know what a 205 is. Modern immobilisers really are very difficult to defeat so yes the only realistic way is to do it with the keys/key fob. But as long as you don't leave them within fishing distance of the letterbox that's not a problem either.

Sh1t! I've got the frickin' keys and sometimes I can't start it!

Obviously keep anything valuable out of site, or anything that the opportunist thief might think is valuable. So that hopefully rules out most of the window breaking, sadly nothing will stop that altogether. In fact you could argue that it would be preferable to have a window broken over some ham-fisted chav bursting the lock with a screwdriver.

Alarms don't work, everyone ignores them.

The only thing I would then worry about is vandalism. Mine has been keyed, but so has just about any nice car I've owned! If anyone has a way of stopping this then I'd pay good money for that.

I think there is a few people kidding themselves about the desirability of the 205 - we all love them but we are the minority, the rest of the world really doesn't want to get their hands on them.

Oh really? Mine was a target of attempted theft twice in a week... As Miles will testify, the door was proper fcuked.

IMG_0925.jpg

I think maybe you don't live in an area with too many pikey joyriders?

I had the Police knock on my door this week to inform me my car was a prime target for the thieves that are going around as it was older, less secure and high performance... I was tempted to say "no s*it"

:)

The alarm is to let me know as my bedroom is right above my car, and I sleep with a window open, the disklok is to make it unattractive to joy riders, the door unlocked is to stop them damaging it, although the thieves round here are so dumb I wouldnt put it past them to pry the window again without checking the handle. CCTV is on the car to provide some kind of evidence (colour of hoody?) to the police.

GTi/CTi "reliability" as an anti-theft device!

My CTi was stolen twice by the same people. Police found it behind Surbiton station the first time...I stole it back & used a Krooklok whilst I ordered new locks (somehow they'd got hold of the keys), but they stole it again, doing me a favour by stealing the crap badly-working radio & the chav speakers from the parcel shelf....this time returning the car to my driveway as some sort of statement as to how sh*te my car ran. Unfortunately, this time he forgot to wipe off his fingerprints, got arrested when collecting his benefits & was ordered to compensate me by the courts. Not enough but hopefully it taught the scrote a lesson.
