What Sandwich Plate For Gti6 Oil Cooler?

Recommended Posts

pugpete1108

i'm fed up with the minor water leak from the t piece i made for the std oil/water cooler on my 6 engine so i though i would ditch it completely and fit a air cooler instead (mocal or similar)

i'm a little confused about how each one works?

does the std one just cool the oil going to the filter using water?

and using an air cooler does the oil actually go through the cooler rad or is it a seperate water supply just for the rad itself???

so if i go over to air cooled type will i need a new sandwich plate? or does the cooler just hook up to this?

if i need a new sandwich plate can i just remove the plumbing for it for now and connect a new cooler at a later date or will i need to remove the sandwich plate and screw the filter straight to the block?

little things eh

The GTI-6 has an oil water heat exchanger as standard afaik like most modern Pugs to warm the oil quicker & (apparently) lessen engine wear due to cold oil.

On an air/ oil cooler the sandwich plate can have a built in thermostat which opens to allow oil to flow through the wwhole of the oil cooler circuit. There is no water in an air / oil cooler system.

If you go over to the air / oil cooler, the kit will have a new sandwich plate to use with it, the one fitted presently wouldn't work as the oil flows through it using it as a heater matrix type thing so even with the water hoses disconnected it won't leak oil so it won't flow out round the pipes of an oil cooler.

i see cheers, in that case i'm gonna keep the waater cooler for now and see how the temps work out seeing as the car will be mostly for the road with the odd track session.

just ordered some 32mm tube to fabricate a new lower t piece connector to stop the leak and to clear the lower pulley.

I'm not sure you got them in the UK, but I just use a standard 205 GTi remote filter adaptor which bolts to the gearbox, along with the standard GTi sandwich plate., ditching the oil-water cooler. I plumb in an air cooler in between. I cut off the standard Pug hoses and silver solder on #10 fittings.
