Rain Getting In Boot

Recommended Posts

treesimon

I Notice awhile ago rain getting into the boot, at the back corners. Reading several post on here I have sealed the boot lock using silicone sealant and brought a brand new weatherstrip.

Im still getting water in the boot and can see it sat in the rear hatch where the 2 drain holes are. Why did peugeot decided to put the drain holes there so it drain into the car?

Ive sat it the boot with the window wiper cover off and got a mate to hose it down. I cant see it coming through the rear wiper washer or wiper arm,but it still gets in!!

Does anyone no if it is possible for it to come through the spoiler or anywhere esle?

on mine it sometimes comes in through the washer jet surround not sure exactly what lets it in but direction its parked in does make a difference :)

another possibility is the washer bottle, mine leaks into the boot with spirited driving any time it is filled above 1/2 full

hope this helps

I'd say it's definately worth checking this tbh

Earlier this year when we had the heavy rain/snow I spent a week trying to figure out exactly where the water was getting in through my bootlid. On the 1st dry day after i took the car for a spirited run, got home and found a small amount of water in the boot - dawned on me there and then that it was coming from the rear coolant bottle

Just done this job on my xs and i've managed to fix it, so here's what I did!

My main problem I discovered was that a large grommet had dropped out at some point from behind the passenger side rear light, letting all the crap/water from my wheel arch come up behind the light and seep into the boot  so I patched the hole and undersealed over it.

I also..

1. Drained the rear washer bottle, just going to keep it empty and wash the car more often

2. Took out rear speaker grills and sealed the back of the rear quarter badges (where the pins come through the bodywork).

3. Took tail lights out and cleaned/washed rubber seals in warm water to soften them and remove general muck then sealed back on with silicone.

4. Took boot seal off and washed in warm water, dried then refitted and bonded onto bodywork along bottom edge using tigerseal.

5. Took the interior boot panel off and sealed around the boot lock and pins holding the exterior boot panel on.

6. Took off my washer jet that was disintegrating, bought a new one from peugeot and put a bit of silicone around it when putting it back on.

^^ Can't go far wrong using that list, they're the main ones! The spoiler fixings can also be a culprit for leaks i've heard on the gti's but my xs doesn't have one.

I spent almost a day "waterproofing" my 205 but being a daily driver and having sh*t weather at the minute, I now have a nice dry boot and my windows have stopped steaming up as much, time well spent! :D

Cheers for the suggestions.

I think I'll be spending the next dry day busy water proofing the boot out.

maimichris why just seal the bottom of the weatherstrip? and not the whole of the seal?

Also ive heard tiger seal mentioned alot as being a good sealant, Is it a silicone sealant or a gasket sealant?

Just to up date i have spend last friday trying to water proof the boot of my car.

Sealed the weather strip

Sealed the spoiler

Seal both the conduit/gators for the electrics and washer jet hose

Sealed Wiper arm spindle

Sealed the lock and washer jet.

I have still got water finding its way into the rear hatch and coming out of the 2 drain holes.

Could it possibly be coming through the window seal then running into the hatch. never seen one with the window out to know if there is a gap for it to go into then drain out of the holes into the boot.

Slightly annoying now as im running out of ideas.

Interesting... think this is the same as mine

I'm going to carry out this mass water proffing of the boot as my windows steam up so bad all the time! specially in this crap weather! good luck with the getting to the problem though.

Hi mate, sorry I didn't reply, I never seen this topic again!

I only sealed (tigerseal is a PU adhesive/sealant and comes in a tube like silicone etc does and you use it with a sealant gun) the weatherstrip at the bottom to stop it popping off, mine didn't seem to be leaking but when the boot was opened and closed a lot, the seal popped off at the joint.

I'm running out of ideas for you aswell! :D The drain holes are doing their job by letting the water out, but they drain the water away outside the boot so are you sure thats the problem? Is the water from the drain holes definitely going back into your boot?

It could well be the window seal as you said, think i've heard it mentioned before on here. The good thing is you've eliminated a load of stuff so stick with it, there's not much else left! I'd go back to the start, get inside and take your interior boot panel off, get a mate to hose it down and you're bound to see the leak.

Sounds a bit daft, but have you tried adjusting your boot latch so that it closes tighter? Sometimes its the obvious ones! :P

i can see that my tailgate gets water in from the same channel the electrics and washer pipe takes, down the side, in the inside of the tailgate. so it definatly not anything but window seal, spoiler or grommets for electrics/washer pipe. i'm putting my money on the window seal.

Cheers miami chris for explaining tiger seal to me. Ive seal around the complete weatherstrip now anyway, Lol.

Definetly coming out of the boot drain holes.

The ones at the very bottom of the rear hatch underneath the wiper motor cover/panel. two in total, one at each end.

They actually drain inside the boot not outside.

If i leave the car out in the rain for a while Then lift up the rear hatch, just enough to get my head through the gap. Shine a torch into the drain hole- i can see water sat in there. No way is just pissing in but enough to dribble out and run around the boot floor after a blast.

Two possibility i think ive got.

Replace the rear window and get it rebonded in. Two elements have gone already so could kill 2 birds with one stone.

The painful bit is having to take the whole spoiler back off after i spent about two hours sealing it down to make it a neat job.

or

Drill two hole into the tailgate under the rear panel (black slatted one with the badges on) at the very bottom to make to new drain holes that actually drain outside of the seal. block the originals then get some polyethene and cover the interior bit under the panel, like it is on the front doors to stop the inside of the rear windows misting up.

I think i'll have to get the window replaced before i drill the rear hatch. Lol!

Any ideas are more than welcome.

Probably not what you want to hear, but my boot was leaking despite sealing up the lock and trim holes. (Luckily?) I had the rear window smashed when I lived in Winton so had new glass fitted and sealed up. No leaks after that.
