Front End Too Wide?

Recommended Posts

Rolando

on my 205 i've fitted 309 arms and driveshafts but now i've found a set of brakes that will require me to use 11mm wheel spacers.

will this make the front end too wide? would i need to go back to standard 205 stuff?

thanks Rolando

I would expect the wheels would protrude the arches if you have 1.6 hubs (earlier posts give yours as a 1.6) Are you using the 1.6 wheels? If so , perhaps the 1.9 alloys would clear your brakes without spacers? If you try it and the wheels stick out too far and you'd like to consider the 1.9 speedlines , you can trial fit a 1.9 wheel from mine if you like - good to see another Truro pugger!

I am using 20mm spacers with 309 wishbones, I also have adjustable top mounts for even more camber :P:D

I am using Nimrod wheels though which are a different offset, if I put 1.9 wheels on mine it would probably stick out too far, at the moment its just fine though.

sorry i should have said i'm using 309 hubs as well and 1.9 wheels already. the brakes are off a 306 and to use the standard cyclone wheels you need to use the 11mm so think its the same with 1.9 wheels?

as everyone knows with 309 arms the wheels sit flush with the arch, so with spacers, they'd be sticking out 11mm more.

what do you lot think then? will it be too wide? will i need to lose the 309 arms and shafts?

Are they gti-6 brakes? If so, they should just bolt on with 1.9 wheels.

Perhaps some wheels with better calliper clearance Ro. It's a shame to lose the handling benefits of the 309 arms.

well i wanted to keep the standard 1.9 wheels thats the only thing but i'm just curious to know if i do buy the brakes will the wheels stick out too far and if so will that cause a problem.

dont really want to sell my 309 set up either, just bought a passenger side driveshaft and fitted new boots to it.

From having 309 arms on my car, depending on ride height, 11mm extra offset (outwards) will probably cause you problems. One way around it could be to remove the bodykit, and trim the metal of the wing back as far as you dare before putting the bodykit back.

hmmmm dont really fancy that and didnt think about it rubbing the wings. good point made. thank you. think i'll leave it in that case and wait for another set to come up that i dont need to use wheel spacers.

whats the difference in length between the 205 and 309 arm do you know?

Not much, about 10mm from when I compared some.

so could i go back to standard gti set up, use the spacers and then end up with the same handling of the 309 set up or does it not work like that?

I have the same problem, only i need 20mm spacers to clear brombo 4 pots (from a 406 coupe) the wheels stick out way too far but i dont want to go back to 205 driveshafts and wishbones because i have a gti-6 box fitted so cant lose any more steering lock, and i don't want to lose the 1.9 wheels. Don't no what to do??

Doesn't work like that I'm afraid. The 309 arms are longer, giving you extra width at the lower ball joint. As the top of the strut remains in the same place you get negative camber. The top of the wheel does not move out as much as the additional length of the 309 arms.

Spacers will increase your track width and change your offset.
