1991 205 Xt, Need It To Be Faster!

Ive got a '91 205 XT 1360cc Im not sure what BHP the XT is? I think its 80Bhp?

 

Anyway is there any cheap/easy mods to make it quicker??

Look for a user called Swordfish120 and look at his project thread.

 

He has an XT which is currently being rebuilt although previously it had a flowed head, a cam, and some bike carbs. Its going back together with a few more modifications now. I've seen the car and say it isnt slow and would most likely pass alot of GTi's in 8v form.

theres quite a few threads with base model shells (ie XT, XS, Rallyes etc) in the project threads sections, have a glance through some to give you some ideas. Most popular engine swaps are either; XS, Mi16, GTI, or TU5j2 lumps

If its for a track then get some tidy suspension and a LSD. if its for the road then get a can of red paint and cover everything, including the windscreen. garuanteed 15bhp gains from just 2 cans of the red stuff. yellow only gives 13bhp and is usually more expensive.

Fold the rear seats down would be your best option, makes it lighter. Theres nothing you can do cheaply to the TU engine to make it quicker and fitting a 1.6 engine with carbs isn't exactly cheap.

Only wanted a bit of helpfull advice?

 

I get it - the XT isnt the best or cheapest to mod and Ill prob be better off getting a XS or Gti, Paint the whole car including windows?? thanks for being so helpfull mate.

Swap for a 106gti engine with 1.4xsi gearbox(4,28 FD). This is probably the cheapest solution.

 

There are a lot of topics regarding tuning tu engines on here, so use the search button and you will most definatelly find your answers.

Or you could sling the XS gearbox on it, straight on and it'll give you a bit more acceleration, or throw on the Solex Z2 carb from an xs, it'll give the 1360 tu 85bhp....... easier and cheaper than a full on engine swap!

Dont forget the xs Camshaft, its slightly wilder

You might need the inlet manifold as well, I'm not 100% sure what carb the xt has but the solex might not bolt straight on!

looking at your sig pic leads me to believe taking that gymnast off your bonnet would aid the acceleration slightly! :)

 

I would not be able to concentrate on the road with that clam wide open in front of me... FLANGE..

 

either way i don't give a fcuk.

 

 

no but seriously, there are some very fruity tu engines knocking about, the search option is not the easiest to use, if you click on the more search options to get the full window, and again on the advanced help, it will tell you how to use it a bit better.. took me ages to get the hang of.

Right, making your car go faster. This is basically three main factors.

 

-reduced wieght

-getting more air/fuel into the engine

-getting rid of exhaust gas quicker

 

with retro engines like these most power can be found from inlet work (twin carbs etc) and head work such as porting, polishing and gas flowing. A 4-2-1 manifold may help as well but these are fu****g hard to find for TU3 engines. Going further would be domed pistons and fast road cams. Realistically though these are all bloody expensive mods, at least £100 for some light head work if you do the taking apart of the engine yourself!

 

The cheapest mod prob would be a twin choke solex carb, for which you will the inlet manifold as well as it is twin barrel instead of one. I belive there is one on ebay right now!

All that work for 5bhp! The XS gearbox is the same anyway.

The XT had a twin choke as standard, so i can't see another one making a difference.

 

The XT was the same engine as the XS, just with a slightly milder cam so it made 80bhp instead of 85, it has the same gearbox as the XS so fitting an XS box won't make jack of difference. Yiu can fit an XS cam but good luck finding one that hasn't had the lobes worn out by now, or you can go for a new cam but i recently spent £400 on a cam and rockers from piper, hardly a cheap upgrade and if you fitted one to an otherwise standard engine it would be completly wasted as you would never access it's full power potential.

 

If you want some free modifications then here is my advice. Remove the standard exhaust manifold and give it a good clean off then have a look down the ports, you'll see some lobes in there. If you grind those lobes out the gases flow a bit nicer and you get a good gain in midrange torque.

Also get someone to set the ignition timing up properly. It's not that difficult to do yourself, you simply get the engine idling at it's full operating temperature (very important) and then you slacken off the distributor bolts you can then gently move the distributor back and forward until you hear the idle speed peak. Once it does tighten up the dizzy and reset the idle speed.

The last thing i would suggest is to remove the main jet from the carb and drill it out with a 1.25mm drill bit for a bit more fuel.

 

But presonally i dont give a fcuk what anyone thinks :blink:
