Does This Sound Right

Hi, i've just got myself a 306 STDT (i part-ex'd my 405 for it) and the previous owner has fitted it with a boost gauge. I was driving it back from picking it up yesterday and my mate Matt said i should see what it would boost to, so i floored it in 3rd on the M4 and the boost went up to 20PSI before it ran out of revs.

Now i know cack all about turbos 'cept that they have some blades that spin and make cars go fast before they blow up but does that boost pressure seem unusually high for a diesel. It did go well though  Thanks. Mark

Sounds like someone has played with the fueling and boost.

Standard is about 12psi. Turn the boost down before it knackers itself, just use it as a daily get you about mobile (I speak from experience here).

I may try another boost gauge on it first just to check it's not a dodgy gauge. It only goes up that far if i really wedge my foot in to the upholstry, crusing down the motorway at 75 it was doing about 5psi (and using bugger all fuel  )

They run a bar of boost usually, so 14.5ish psi, your's sounds like its had the boost and fuel turned up

what stu said, they are meant to run 14, most have tired wastegate actuator springs and rarely boost to standard now, unless fiddles with.

on a stock Intercooler 20 is a bit much, 18 seems to be the happy medium.

STDT being a saloon, Phase 1?

I'll confirm the reading with another boost gauge, i may try posting a video of the gauge to see if you guys think it's a bit off.

Mei, it is a saloon and the front end looks phase 1, i'm not very clued up on 306's though.

*experssing my ignorance about turbo's again* If the boost is too high how would i go about turning it down?

depends which turbo it has, there are two types of actuator/wastegate, one integrated KKK which has a locknut and adjuster rod in the end of the actuator, just visible through the back of the r/h wheelarch.

or the separate type where you need to decrease the tension on the wastegate arm by popping the arm off and winding it out on the threads, you'd do this from underneath.
