Twin Fans Or Oil Cooler For 1600 8v ?

Recommended Posts

.

I have a 1600 8v that was converted to a 1900 8v and been running the car for a few years doing hills and sprints.

Next year I am changing class so putting in a 1600 8v again.

The 1900 has the oil cooler but the 1600 runs without one and uses the twin fan as std.

I was just wondering if to fit the oil cooler to the 1600 and would there be any benefits from this

or do I just leave well enough alone ?

Only turbodiesels have twin fans as standard. Petrol 205s never had them and don't need them IMO, I've never seen one that can't cool itself while standing still with one fan.

You only need an oil cooler if the oil is getting too hot, unlikely in sprints and hillclimbs I imagine? In fact a cooler would probably just overcool your oil.

If you do need a cooler get a proper Mocal one with a thermostatic sandwich plate, the standard Peugeot one is pretty useless.

I think you would do best to just leave it as is if it works

(edit: Actually come to think of it there were some petrol 205s that had twin fans but I think it was the Africa market models or something)

I wouldn't bother with either as above, i don't. In fact i worry more about not getting enough heat into the oil etc!

Less weight too...

Australia, or any 205 with air conditioning. Twin fans are great. They connect in series at low speed, then parallel for high speed. You only need one however for track work. It's more important to fit the oil cooler.

OK hot climates

I agree that the twin fan circuit design is very elegant, anything that does away with that silly hot resistor thing is good in my book.

Thanks for the info lads,

I had been thinking of std fan setup/no oil cooler as I was unsure how good/bad the 1900 oil cooler system was.

But seening how it is laying here I thought I wonder if I should stick it on lol

And as said if an oil cooler is needed then Mocal one would be a better option

In any kind of competition use I would always use a oil cooler.

2 fans is on too many. Once the car is driving you do not need a fan and a single fan will easily cope with heavy traffic.

As said on a Sprint the oil will never get that hot so it's really not needed, less things to go wrong as well

PS, Twin fans are on Gentry's too  and have the bonus of turning off with the ignition

Why? Because if you're not getting enough heat into the oil, which in many competition applications, you wont, then why bother having one at all, even if with a thermostat...

I wouldn't even bother running a fan extra weight and all that crap.
