Removing 8v Loom For Gti6 Conversion

Recommended Posts

Gman

Hi everyone,

I've got to the stage of the conversion where I'm removing the 8v loom so it can be sent to Spikey for it to be mated to the GTI6 loom. I've located the brown multiplugs, but as you can see from the attached photo there is a lot more wiring that comes through the gromit in the bulkhead.

It's been a few days since I looked at the routing of the wires, but what do I need to take out. I assume I remove the ECU and the wiring from that connects to the brown multiplugs?

Many thanks

Graham

Theres not alot of wiring to pull threw really

Theres the two brown plugs, the big ECU plug, and the plug that goes onto the Tachymetric relay

Just the brown plug's I would assume not knowing how he does them, They can be cut off with around 6>12" of trailing lead, Cut off the Big Gromment and fill the middle up with RTV etc as that hole is not used again as it's too close to the Exhaust manifold

Can I also ask how do you remove the ECU plug and Tech relay. I don't really want to remove the dash, but that seems to be the only way.

It depends if you want to keep the 8V loom or not, if you cut the ECU plug off you won't need to touch the dash...

I don't need to keep the loom, but I've tried pulling the wires through and they wont budge. Maybe I should just take the dash off anyway, as I hear it's better to run the loom from the battery side, rather than runnning it behind the manifold.

Chop the plug's off and you can pull the wires thru one by one to start with then they all come out

Common sence has never been my forte! lol

Great idea, now all I need to do is decide where to run the new loom!

Easy, Blank the old hole off and run the sensor loom under the expansion bottle with the main car loom (Phase 1's are like this std), Routing them thru the old 8v position isn;t best due to the exhaust manifold/heat unless very well heat wrapped up, even the 8v ones suffer from heat

But wouldn't that mean the dash has to come out anyway to connect them to the brown multiplugs?

Thanks

just cut the plugs off the ecu loom and tacho relay, and send the whole loom,

longer the cables the better :)

i will then just bin whats needed (if you still require me to do the loom)

hope that helps

Spiky, without sucking up too much, you're the key to this project! If I had to do the wiring myself I wouldn't have attempted the conversion.

I know you route it through the original grommet, but do you know if I can run it through the passenger side without taking the dash out? I don't fancy unplugging the brown multiplug to get it through the bulkhead, so will probably just make the whole a little bigger and just use a larger grommet

either way is feasable dude :)

i can unpluck and label the brown plugs for you if needed and you just push the pins back in once through the bulkhead :D 2 mins jobs fo both of us :)

or more drastic action would be to drill i big hole, which isn't needed really, when the pins can be unplucked from the connectors :D

Don;t need to remove the dash you can pull the plugs thru, Just a couple of ties to overcome but you can but your hands thru and cut them.
