Head Gasket Replacement Work

Recommended Posts

Bottrill

Aftenoon guys.

I have just started the job of replacing the HG on my June 1990 1.6 GTI. All is going well so far, i am taking my time as its the first HG I have changed. (I have ordered a HG set from GSF with new bolts)

Are there any other things I should replace with the head off (hopefully will get to that part tomorrow) apart from the cambelt?

I am having trouble however sourcing the right dizzy cap and rotor arm, even my local GSF is having trouble. I currently have a screw fix brown cap with male ends, however according to GSF it says that particular part is for a 1.9 on their computer. Any advice?

Sorry for all the Q's.

Lee.

Recently bought a new distributor cap for my 1989 1.6 from GSF at Kingston Vale, had no problem, definitely the right one with female terminals...it's made by Beru if that's any help.

Definitely fit a new cambelt & tensioner, unless you have history showing these have been changed not too many miles previously.

Late 1.6's use the same cap as the 1.9's

Cheers for the replies so far chaps. Right, the head is now off. The gasket was well and truly bu55ered, so no wonder it went about as well as my old 1.3 polo GT Coupe from when i was 18. I am surprised the car ran at all. Tonight i'm going to get the head skimmed (there was also a blowing manifold due to a bodge repair in the past resulting in an exhaust manifold bolt missing and an old gasket being used too) - the mind boggles. Also traced a very worn rear torque engine mount with excessive play which would explain the engine knocking when turning off.

Couple of other questions,

The water pump looks like new, so that is staying, the tensioner however is very dry with excessive play. Does the 1.6 (1990) GTI use the same tensioner as the 1.9? GSF only lists the 1.9 tensioner for the 205 GTI.

Rear engine mount - best price, and from where? Auto five seem on the expensive side for standard parts.

Thanks

Tensioner is the same, BBM do good quality uprated mounts.

But I have to say, a quick search would have revealed these answers for you, all the information you need is on this forum, that is why no one has replied before now.

depends which year the GSF's 1.9 timing belt is for, may be the later type which as far as I know was never used on the 1.6.

you need the sliding sprung tensioner and 113t belt, not the eccentric tensioner and 114t belt.

GSF supply the correct sliding tensioner for the 1600.

Cheers, Tom. I have ordered the tensioner, new sump gasket, oil filter from GSF. Got the aux belt and cambelt from Peugeot.

Dropped the head off last night for skimming. Will be replacing the valve stem oil seals when the head comes back later today, due to one slightly weaping, then rebuild begins.
