Unstable, Wallowing At Speed

Recommended Posts

munster

I have a handling issue that is really spoiling the fun of my 205.

Above 65/70mph the car feels very twitchy and unstable. Even driving on a smooth bypass at speed, if i go to overtake or just give the wheel a turn the car feels like it wants to get a tank slapper on.

The car drives and accelarates fine, doesnt pull to one side and will track in a straight line fine.

I have changed these parts since owning it and have noticed little improvment,

Rebuilt rear beam

Gti6 rear shocks

15" wheels and toyo tyres

I know that my top mount bearings need replacing, so they are next. What else should i be looking at before sheeling out on new shocks etc?

And is it likely its the top mount bearing causing this instabilty?

Ideas appreciated as this is really spoiling the fun of this car!

Sounds similar to the problem I had a while ago. I changed wishbone bushes, then front hubs (the hole that the wishbone ball joint goes into can become ovaled) neither of these things cured the problem altogether and I eventually changed both wishbones, turned out that the ball joints were knackered even though they didn't show up excessive play. With new ones on though, it really tightened up the front end.

I've a problem with my 306 which sounds similar.

Its the inner joint on the steering rack assembly, it's VERY worn lol.

Did you do the rear sandwich mounts when you rebuilt the beam?

Let us know how you get on if it is the Top Mount bearings, I'd be interested to find out.

Yes i put solid mounts on the rear.

I will report back after changing them. But to be honest i will be amazed if worn bearings could be affecting the handling this much. Fingers crossed though.

I had this exact problem a short while back, replaced both wishbones and it completely cured it.

as above!!. Its normally worn wishbone mounts or rear trailing arm bushes that cause this.
