Help Assesing Damages Of Spun Shell

Recommended Posts

unariciflocos

I had some spare time last night so I took the pistons out of the block to see the damages.

Don't have time right now to take the crank to be measured so I wanted to ask how bad it looks and if you guys think the crank is reusable. I assume the rod is gone.

It's very important for me to recover as many of the parts as possible because I don't have access to other parts here as these engines are EXTREMELY rare. I know I should wait to get the parts measured, but I really can't spare any time for this and I'll be flying to the UK in the following weeks and I'd like to start sourcing parts if any of mine are fubar.

Any help, opinions or suggestions appreciated.

You need to get it measured. This is the only way to know whether the crank will grind or if it is scrap. Also the rod can be reclaimed if it is not too bad. But you must measure.

Most machine shops can supply shells to suit the crank they grind. Let them supply shells and you will know you have the right bits. You can get 0.5 oversize shells but they can be hard to come by.

Also is 0.5 a large amount of material to take off a crank ?

Looking at them pics i would say the crank definately needs to be at least polished by a shop possibly re-grind more likely, the shells as you say

have spun and looks like the conrod will be well worn away.Think you will be wasting money if you just put new bearings in.
