Gearbox Oil

Recommended Posts

luke1987

Just had a BE3 1.6 box rebuilt with quaiffe lsd and the bloke who rebuilt it said to use 10/40 semi synthetic engine oil in the box just wondering if anyone else has ever heard of this apparently it makes it run a lot smoother and slicker any info much appreciated.

Use standard Peugeot spec gearbox oil, Total BV

I wouldn't. The engine oil is designed to support loads via oil pressure. Gearbox oil has EP (extreme pressure) additives to help it maintain a film under, yep you guessed it, extreme pressure, as seen between the gear teeth when transmitting a lot of torque.

Not to mention that the synchros also won't work well due to the viscosity of the oil being incorrect for the design clearances.

i would not do it, just put some performance gear oil in specialy when you just spend 100s on a diff and rebuild

Yeah using standard internals with quaife lsd had reverse gear and 3rd and 4th syncros changed plus lsd fitted cost £430 for all that plus £620 for diff so stands about a £1000 looks awsome tho never seen a 205 box so clean ill post a few pics

Id worry why the gearbox builder said to use engine oil, with this in mind, has he done a good job of the gearbox itself ?

Not quite as daft as it sounds, some engine oils have a mild EP package and are similar in viscosity to the Pug oil anyway, so likely to give a decent shift without synchro damage.

Total BV, I've been running a box with plate diff in that no wear issues on the diff or the syncro's as said the syncro's (alloy collars) don't like anything else.

Looks nice and clean, most boxes do when they get built, who'd want to want on the minging smelling box internals unless it's all washed away. ouch on the price tag :s
