205 1.9 Gti Cambelt Slipped.

Recommended Posts

dk73

Just a quick one guys,

What would happen if the cambelt slips on a 1.9 gti engine?

Would it just take the head out of play or would it cause damage to the bottom end?

Answers on a post card please.

Regards dk73.

anything from nothing to 8 bent valves and a holed piston, impossible to say till its apart really, unless there's a rod sticking out of the block.

at least the head will come off easy what with it being put on not long ago ;)

Do you know how many teeth its slipped? if its 2-3, worth timing it back up, you may be lucky, any more than that then your looking at valve damage, what rpm did it happen at?

Stick another belt on it and after turning it over by hand to check that it feels OK, do a compression test. No point pulling the head off before doing that in my opinion.

8v's are an interference engine, but there's a fair amount of valve-piston clearance at TDC so you can be lucky and get away with a belt slipping or snapping.

Cheers guys,

It went clunk at tickover, the belts fine but the tensioner failed.

It was a new one too. :)

Wasn't insulting the engine, was answering why Alastair calls them "she"

It must be his perception.

Pffft they all let you down eventually, women that is. At least with a man we let everyone down so early on so as there is no surprises!

^_^

Anyway, back on subject, have you tried winding the engine backwards by hand?

if your cambelt has slipped off you probly put the crank pully on the wrong way round, if it goes on the wrong way the belt does slipp off... lucky i seen mine coming off and relised what i had done.

never heard of that before!

Dave you need to get a new tensioner on there and re-set the timing, of course it wont turn over at this very stage as the timing is incorrect, fingers crossed you havent bent the valves doing so

yeah its quite weird ive stripped my engine down afew times now and put it on backwards twice and both times the belt was slipping of the cam pully... so its a possibility, with me not actually been a mechanic, ive found owt what happens when you put things together incorrectly :)

surely if was a new tenstioner it should have some sort of warrenty with it, so if it has done any damage shouldnt that be covered - just a suggestion but its worth checking
