Painting Torsion Bars.

I want to give my t/b’s a quick paint before fitting them, just to add some protection from the elements.

 

What am I best to use, hammerite of some kind. Plasticote maybe, or just normal car paint?

 

I’m not to fussed what colour they are as they will be under the car anyway!

I've used Plasticote before and it seems to stand up pretty well, although obviously not as well as powdercoating.

I've used paint by Eastwood before - "Extreme Chassis Black" - it's bloomin' indestructible; takes a while to cure without an oven, but once it's set, it's the daddy !

 

Alternatively, try POR15; both available online from Frost's Restoration.

 

Both give a top finish, and last for ages.

hammerite is good but i find it chips very easy so no good under the car

Hammerite is designed for garden gate, benches an' the like - items not generally subject to 60mph+ particles of grit and salt hitting them !

 

It dries to a hardbut brittle finish: VERY resisient until that surface is broken, then it just comes off in sheets.

 

Seriously, I've tried all sorts on the 'pan and suspension on my drag-racing beetle, and the only thing that's stood the test of time is Eastwood Chassis black - it comes in a rattle can, so I can get a smooth pro-look finish to the front beam; if it'll stick to that, then a rear beam on a pug (which is likely to be higher off of the ground, and out of the way of the most severe grit / stone / particle impacts by being at the back of the car) should stay mint for a lot longer.

 

Coincidentally, I blasted my hubs with it (actually, the "Extreme" Chassis Black version, which is even more $hit to a blanket-like) this very weekend whilst battling more wheel bearing issues in an attempt to stop the rust.

 

www.frost.co.uk is the site that I use, as they'll post out rattle cans; two should be enough to do the entire rear beam, I would hazard a guess.

 

As for POR 15, they sell that too (as mentioned earlier) but it's brush-on; unless you're going concours, that'll be fine.

 

I wouldn't waste my time with Hammerite - experience has led me away from it !

Chassis Black is only available in . . . erm . . . black (Gloss, Matt or Satin). Having a look at the website, the Eastwood rattle cans only comes in black.

 

POR 15 Proper appears only to come in Black, Silver, or Grey, although you can paint over it; the data sheet reads:

 

"CAN I PAINT OVER POR-15 WITH OTHER PAINTS?

Absolutely, POR-15 will accept all paints including lacquer-based paints.

Either POR-15 Self -Etching Primer or Tie-coat Primer are the best

primers to use before topcoating POR-15. Be sure to read our directions

and tip sheets thoroughly regarding topcoating before using POR-15."

 

It goes without saying that the topcoat (whatever colour) will only last for a while in that kind of environment . . . the POR15 will be on there for life !!

Don't use hammerite, its c**k. POR15 comes in black, silver, austin healey green! Ford blue! MG marron! and Chevrolet Orange!

They were blasted, Granville rust converted, sanded back, etch primed then POR15 engine enamel'ed in Chevy Orange.
