S16 ? How To Identify

Recommended Posts

chris-stdt

I recently bought a 306 xsi cheap with no t + t

The car was sold to me as an 2l 8v but when i saw the car i noticed it had two cam shafts !!! (i didnt tell the seller what he had i just gave him the cash and drove off ;) )

I would like to identify the engine which i belive to be an s16 as it has the black plastic inlet manifold but it has 406 2.0 written on the timing cover in tipex as if to identify the engine when taken out ,so if the engine has come from a 406 will it have the same output as an s16 lump from a 306 ?

Any info on how to identify will be much appreiciated and if needed i can get the engine numbers tonight when i get home as it may be perfect to be dropped into a 205

Thanks

Chris

sounds like its the 135 bhp XU10J4R, a picture will help.

does it have silver camshaft covers with a plastic coilpack cover? or black plastic camshaft covers?

if its a phase 1 306 it should have been 8 valve, phase 2 were all 16v, though the writing you mention suggests that its most definitely the 135 bhp engine taken from a 406.

Look for an engine identification plate: should say RFY on it if it's a 2.0 16v. If it says RFY it could be either an S16 engine with the XU10J4 head or lower powered 2.0 16v engine with an XU10J4R head. These both have a plastic inlet, although they are quite different.

A picture would help TBH, but here's an S16 engine:

Here's an RFY (non S16) or RFV engine:

If it has a metal inlet, then it's a GTI6 (XU10J4RS - ID code RFS) engine. Here's one of those just for s*its and giggles:

If it says LFY on the engine ID plate you have a 1.8, XU7JP4.

It is a phase two

It has plastic covers on the rocker cover and oil filler on the top not like the engine sarty has

So it will be the 135 hp engine ?

Thanks

yup, the RFV/XU10J4R.

a decent engine to use if you find one in decent condition and you don't mind upgrading some parts, like the exhaust and intake manifold and cams.

has the advantage of nicer management than the older engines

No worries.

None of those are my engines Chris; they were just posted so you can look at it and say 'aaah, that one'. May help other people ID engines too.

So I gather it's the middle one then?

If so, you have a cracking cylinder head to go to work on. Look: here.

just another thought as well, it could be the LFY that DrSarty mentioned, they look like the RFV from above as they uise a very similar head, the same cam covers and intake manifold, though they do have an alloy block so look for that.

the 406 uses that too.

It's not all bad - if it is a 136hp 2.0 16v lump, then fitting GTi-6 cams, inlet and exhaust manifolds will turn it into a nice engine ;)
