Clutch Help Required

Recommended Posts

Fazza6868

I have an alloy block Mi16 , my friendly mechanic is going to wip the box off over the next couple of days as he is in the process of removing the crank to sort the big ends out (but thats another story) he has suggested that whilst the box is off it may be worth slapping a new clutch in, firstly how do I know what box it is that I have got , once I have worked that out what type of clutch is required , i have heard talk of be1, be3 , push pull etc but I am very confused. Based on the gearing i am pretty sure its a 1.6 box but I couldnt be completely sure . It is lift reverse though does this give any clues ?

Thanks for your help

You need a 1.9 Mi16 clutch. They are only available with BE3 style release bearings so if you have a BE3 thats all you need, if you have a BE1 (lift up reverse by first) then you will need to get a BE1 205 GTI release bearing as well.

The one exception to this is if you have a BE1 Mi16 gearbox as these use a BE3 bearing.

Cheers for that so what is the best/easiet way of telling what box it is ?

Is your reverse gear below fifth or by first with a lift up?

Edit: Sorry, I just read it properly, you have lift up reverse. Have a look at your gearbox on the top where the clutch cable is fitted, if its attached to an arm that goes straight into the gearbox you have a BE1 Mi16 box but if the cable goes onto a quadrant that then pushes a rod that pushes an arm that comes out of the front of the gearbox then you have a BE1 from a 205 GTI.
