What Have I Done Wrong

Recommended Posts

Dylan l

I have recently finished rebuild/instalation of my 1.6 xu5ja.

Went to start it no problems but it went downhill from there. Now the problems begin.

The oil pressure was on the end of the scale in the old engine and have transfered the pressure swich from old to new engine but I only have half on the fresh engine and it soon drops down to first notch with it just idling.

Have swapped the oil pump but it made little difference.

So does anybody have any suggestions before I take the the engine out.

A couple of things spring to mind, Have you done the crank pully bolt up tight as some of the pumps use friction to drive them round?

The other thing is, with the sump off, looking into the bottom of the engine, just inside the mating face where the sump gasket goes there is a cap head grub screw that sometimes gets removed to blow the oil ways out but ive had an engine where this has not been replaced.

But check the crank pully first as its easier.

Just thinking also, did you check all the tollerances after fitting the new bearing shells? You may have a ground crank and fitted standard size shells.

Yeah, check the crank pulley is torqued up, 100Nm I think. I managed to get the pulley lined up wrong once, so the woodruff key wasn't in it's slot in the pulley, which meant the pulley wasn't clamping the oil pump drive and I didn't get any oil pressure. So it might be worth having a look and making sure everything is aligned properly.

1.6's use a keyed drive wheel unless upgraded to a 1.9 wheel

easy ones to check are oil filter not being blocked, oil not over full or under.

bearing clearance plays a part, proper gaskets used and not sealant. pick up pipe not drawing in air or blocked.

pressure relieve working properly, obviously worn out pump too

In that case, maybe check that you have the drive key in there!

what did the rebuild consist of?

just sticking a set of standard size bearings in high mileage engine?

Check's done 5litres of oil in 5 out.

New peugeot sump gasket and pickup filter checked.

Cranked with oil filter off good flow, cranked with pressure switch off not so good flow.

cranked with rocker cover off no flow.

Will have to try the crankshaft bolt first.

I'd get the crank checked then really as the pins do wear and the bearings won;t be in tollance unless your very lucky
