Mi16 Rolling Road Figures

Im new to this forum so hi to every one. Last friday i had my car put on a rolling road to see how much power and torque its making, its a standard 1.9 mi16 engine apart from a k&n air filter and maniflow back box, it made 152 hp @ 6642 rpm and 125 lbs/ft @5160 rpm at the fly with the fueling spot on.

I was wondering if this is a bad figure because its lost 8 hp and 10 lbs/ft? ive compression tested it and its between 185-195 psi does this indicate an unhealthy engine? Any feedback much appreciated

Hi, try a search as there's plenty of info on here.

 

Doesn't sound like a bad figure tbh, presuming it's an average c20yo standard un-rebuilt Mi.

Yep figure would seem a little low,Compression seems to be about right from what I was told during my rebuild,Although I'm getting 190psi stone cold across the 4 cylinders.

That sounds like a healthy mi to be honest. although I would have expected to see compression around the 195 mark across all cylinders. Just keep an eye on the lower results. I've always thought these engines are 0-170 = dead, 170-190 = last legs, 190 onwards was ok. A lad who I know had a rebuilt mi16 and that made 162bhp and 136ftlbs. your figure certainly isnt dissapointing!

Are the figures your quoting for a warm engine ?

 

After my rebuild I got 190psi but as I say that was cold !!

 

Regarding the 150bhp figure,That is good actually,I never gave a thought to tired engines/rebuilds etc then add in rolling road tolerances then your doing well mate.

I have always done it with a warm engine, but thinking about it the figures which I have posted are what I have read about on this forum and been told by mechanics but none of them have said warm/cold. When I checked my mi16 from warm it was about 195 +/- 2 or 3 psi across all 4.

Thanks for the replys every one, what sort of price would i be looking at for a basic rebuild? i was going to change the inlet cam and convert to standalone management but maybe i should concentrate on getting standard compression and power before i try to increase the power and torque. Thanks again

Yes, look after the fundamentals first. It's a good engine anyway at 160bhp all day long.

 

When was the last time your injectors were cleaned?

Ive never had the injectors cleaned, would this show up on the fueling diagnostics at the rolling road as the guy on the rollers said the fueling was spot on? Thanks

Well it's not like you have a problem.

 

It's a car with an engine nearly 20 years old; so to be only 8bhp down on a factory figure is not bad at all, and that's subject to variances in rolling roads.

 

Frankly it may not be worth doing anything; if it ain't broke......

 

If you have money burning a hole, then you certainly won't lose any power by refreshing certain items. Valves, liners and rings wear over time, as do valve guides. And injectors, fuel and oil filters get dirty, as do inlet tracts and breather pipes. Even electronic components break down over time and don't perform optimally.

 

Bit-by-bit it adds up to effectively a drain in power. I suppose slackness in the drive train as it wears over time may play a part too.

 

In short, if nothing else is majorly wrong, i.e. no clouds of smoke or poor running, then I wouldn't really bother.

 

Maintain it, and only embark on tuning or serious engine refreshing if you have to.

 

Once you start chasing horses the race never ends.

Sounds pretty reasonable to me.. these engines are getting on a bit now so you're never going to find a 100K engine that still makes 160bhp. I'd just enjoy what you have for a bit, then if you feel the need to a proper (and I mean proper) rebuild. No half-arsed changing just rings and bearings, go for new liners, rings, bearings, everything, and reap the rewards.

these engines are getting on a bit now so you're never going to find a 100K engine that still makes 160bhp.

 

I beg to differ, is worn management parts as much as anything that affects the output, my 2.0 MI has been on several rollers now and produced 160 bhp ATF, its on 101k miles and is unmodified.

 

my 205 is unmodified, and bar a refresh at 115k is still the original 145k engine and produces 130 bhp+ on Motronic management.

Thats a contradiction... been on rollers and made xxx at the flywheel...

 

It was estimated at xxx at the flywheel I think you mean
