Reverse Gear Crunching?

Recommended Posts

Joshy

Hello!

I've noticed a very annoying problem with my GTi-6 powered 205 (1.6 gearbox).

I've found that randomly I will be unable to engage reserve gear without the gearbox crunching! It seems to be completely random (most of the time I can engage reserve with no fuss whatsoever).

My foot is always completely down to the floor and the car is completely stopped. I've tried releasing and re-engaging the clutch, waiting for the gearbox to 'spin down'/'slowdown' in neutral for a few (30) seconds, and I've tried engaging other gears, but still CRUNCH :). The only thing I noticed that helped was switching the engine off, which as you can agree is less than practical! :)

Any ideas, Clutch, gearbox (although I'm probably going to need one of these soon considering how I crunch it into reverse regardless!), something more simple?

I had something similar and my clutch cable just needed tightening a bit so the pedal was level with the brake. Piece of pi** to do, only took 5 minutes.

It'll be the clutch dragging slightly that's doing it, you probably need to adjust the cable like Jason said.

Also have a check and make sure all your engine to gearbox bolts are (a) in and (:) tight!

Brilliant advice guys, I think that has cured it!

Although relearning the biting point is going to be fun! :D

mine will crunch everytime unless i put it into a forward gear first

am i right in thinking the reverse doesn't have a synchro? which maybe why this is happening??

Correct, I've always gone into first then back out and into reverse - in all cars.

IIRC my driving instructor taught me to do it.

If you're rolling forwards or backwards then it will definitely crunch, so make sure you're stopped, then give it a sec and engage reverse slowly and smoothly. The clutch will always drag a little bit, so you'll probably never get rid of the little crunch. Just live with it.
