Hg Couple Of Questions

Hi all this is my first proper post iv bin reading through hundreds off threads and im amazed at the work done.

 

Right im buyin a 205 1.9gti the bloke told me it has HG Failure not really a problem so i asked him how he knows he said a pug mechanic come out and said theres oil in the water so what i wanna know is,

 

Is it definatly HG?

 

Can i drive this car 50 miles while like this?

 

it hasnt overheated as he has had it off the road so all help appreciated

If its a late model with an oil/water cooler it could be that it has failed, otherwise it pretty much has to be the HG.

its an 'f' reg. Would i still be able to drive it say 50miles?

Pay the man, and call the AA/RAC out to collect you.

 

Perhaps worth checking he's not attempted to fix it and rounded off/snapped a head bolt

he said when he was told that it was the headgasket he just stopped driving it because hes not a mechanic and didnt have the money to get it fixed because of being out off work. Im organising a trailer or recovery neway but just wandered if i needed to really

An F reg wont have a water/oil cooler so its the HG probably. I wouldn't drive it at all, you risk making it a lot more expensive to repair.

yeah that. it's not worth the risk of knackering the engine bearings.

will a faulty HG stop the engine from starting. It turns of but just wont fire?

Depends how bad it's gone. It's never going to start if all the compression is lost through a massive hole!

 

You might be able to start it on three.

 

Do a compression test and it will tell you more.
